I tried getting on and the page stopped loading after the upser cp, register, calender etc buttons and the top links were not styled. Was something wrong, or was it just me?

Yes, we were making a minor change to the forum home page.

Oh lord its so ugly... ~shields his eyes~ Also, it makes the page scroll really badly when viewing on 800x600 resolution, could ya put it back the way it was?

Can you move the ads back to the top corner?

Jona
02-07-2005, 02:50 PM
Yes, please put it back. There is so much less room to view the boards when it's pushed to the side like that. Why can't we have pretty forums like some of the other boards on the WebDeveloper network?

This is ridiculous and ugly and not user-friendly. Please change it back or do something!

The format has been altered to this for a reason. It is a good reason so it will probably stay like this for quite a while. ;)

Such a good reason that it will cause people to stop visiting? I, for one, am from this point forward never visiting the main page - I am going to subscribe to forums and only visit my user control panel until it is changed back. I'm very frustrated. Who wants to visit forums that look like crap? I know that's very straightforward, but honestly the color don't match and the whole color scheme for these forums needs to be changed.

Thanks to URI id and Firefox, I'll probably end up using a user stylesheet to remedy the problem of ugliness...

I think we all agree that it is ugly, hope it was a really good reason.

No colors whatsoever were changed. They remain exactly as before. Only page placements were changed.

Yeah, it still is ugly. As a Web Development that can involve some design we are putting the name to shame. The page has absolutely no flow, there are intruding ads and there is a huge horizontal scrollbar. How can we 'preach' about things like making pages look nice in smaller resolutions and the like when this forum does it too? I'm also doing what Jona did and stepped it up a little further. I've disabled ads on your page, and I've stopped going there. I was all for helping out the site, seeing ads is fine, but when you throw in my face I'm not going to look at them, and to clarify I'm talking about the ad on the bottom of the page, since I'm no longer going to the home page. Regards.

I realize that, but they originally were a blue/purple color. That color scheme was bearable -- why such bold and obnoxious colors as yellow and red, though? I just wish the forum could look good. That's all. (Sorry if I sounded rude in my last post. I try to avoid getting frustrated, but this one was pushing it.)

Ah you mean the color change that occurred about a yr ago. I guess I'm alone in liking this color scheme. It's a lot easier on my eyes than some others.

I originally didn't like the color scheme much, but I got used to it. I don't come here for design inspiration - I've got a completely different list of sites for that. ;)

As far as the new structure for the site, it's not going to stop me from using the homepage...

The color scheme doesn't really bother me at all. In fact, I used something that was either exactly or very close to that color. I had a good reason though, it is the official color of something called Cerified Angus Beef, and the site I created sold that.

I just don't like the squashed feel. If the site were put in the website review forum - let's just say it wouldn't get rave reviews.

I don't want to sound rude or anything, but can we know the good reason? Considering we all use the frontpage and it's negatively affecting us, why is this? Is it supposed to increase add clickage or something?

Jick

I think it might be better for one of the administrators to tell you so I don't give you any wrong information. ;) They are the ones who did the changing after all...

Neczy
02-08-2005, 05:45 PM
I don't wish to sound negative, but if this has been changed for a good reason, then I'd really like to hear it. Right now I'm only seeing negatives, so if one of the admins could 'enlighten' me, I'd appreciate it.

the main page looks awfull, but I can apreaciate that they had an initial reason for changing it, my question is why they didn't backup the site and adjust a copy till the copy looks nice then switch it over. After all that is what most people do...

It's not that complex to understand. We needed space to accommodate a new ad from our advertisers and we shifted thing around to create the space. That is, after all, what keeps these forums up and running.

Also bear in mind that this forum will be upgraded to a newer version of the software, which will allow us greater power in placement of page elements. This version still used tables for layout, and had limited CSS capability. The newer version has full CSS support.

Now this is what I like to hear! :D I'll take ads any day, if it means an upgrade a little later.

The upgrading process has already begun. Actually began just before I came to work for the company. But there are a lot of forums and it's a time consuming process. But it is coming, without a doubt.

If I may ask, I'm looking at the home page, and then a forum index, and they both use the same ads; Why did you need to move the page around to do so? Just curious.

Jick
02-09-2005, 03:53 PM
Well if you watch it closely, every so ofter there is a longer ad. For example the first day that it was changed to this there was an Intel ad that was just about as long as the page. It's actually quite interesting. I've never seen ads so big.

that's some great news! ;) hope i wont die before the changes take place...

JPnyc

Yeah, there are ads that are the same size as before, and others twice as long, but the same width. That's why we needed more vertical space.

The CSS support won't affect posting, just our ability to manipulate the page element placement and styling.

I wouldn't think that is necessary, since some of them may register just in case they need to post (or send a private message), and just read content and get answers without having to ask any. (One of the editors from WebReference.com contacted me through PM but has never actually posted on these forums before.)

Probably not a great amount. There aren't that many users who have registered but never posted.

Probably just when you access the member list page, but not otherwise. Threads are ID-ed and the SQL statement to the DB doesn't cycle through the member list, just calls up that thread ID and the members in it.
