I'm sure that there is already a post concerning this issue since I can't search for "PNG" (due to the fact that the abbreviation contains but 3 words and the search engine has a minimum word length requirement). But I digress...

I'm currently developing the web-site for my online community but I'm having some problems with the graphics. Here is the development preview (http://dreaming.uni.cc/Test/).
As you may see the graphics are (mostly) composed of PNG's (I prefer it over GIF's) and this has caused a rather big problem for me since they are transparent (and Internet Explorer does not look kindly upon transparent PNG's). I've tried various methods including the usage of "filter" (CSS) and the .htc Internet Explorer hack. But I don't know which to use and which is more effective. I was wondering if you could perhaps post some alternatives and maybe some quality walkthroughs and tutorials?

If there's a post concerning this issue already please PM me with the URL and I will delete this post (asuming that the moderator(s) or admin(s) don't delete my post leaving me in quite a pickle).

In advance: Thank you.

Internet Explorer does not support PNG alpha transparency, but the other major browsers do. There's a A List Apart (http://www.alistapart.org) article about this, "Cross-Browser Variable Opacity with PNG: A Real Solution" (http://www.alistapart.com/articles/pngopacity/)

We get the odd thread asking about this once in a while but is by no means a frequently asked question (not in the sections I visit often anyway). Any threads about this would be pretty heavily buried and as you said, the search does rather suck when it comes to searching for anything commonly written as an acronym.

Sadly, whilst png's are indeed far superior and preferable to gif's, Microsoft Internet Explorer is incompetent and not fit for purpose. MSIE can not correctly render png's.

Not being able to search for "PNG" is absolutely infuriating.

I digress, too.

Does anybody know if Microsoft has any plans to support the png file type in the near future?

Thanks. I'm a little embarrassed now.

Well, since alpha transparency is, as I've heard, optional, and since Microsoft "evaluate what technology is best for our users before implementing it", I wouldn't hold my breath.
