That would depend upon your server options, the scripting language you use, and the application you're using.

my server allows for perl, mySQL, and php. i don't have any clue at all how to put something like this in. i've been designing pages mostly with html/css/verybasicjavascript.

Well, you said you're running a blog. What system are you using? If you don't have one yet, you might want to look into one of the many free, powerful PHP and PERL blogs available.

well right now i'm just using HTML to put my entries in, and manually archiving what needs to be archived. I want to be able to maintain my own site and not use a separate thing like blogspot.com that doesn't have anything to do with the current website i have. is there a program out that that would allow me to do this?

I personally use Textpattern (http://www.textpattern.com/), and I'm very happy with it. Prior I was using a system I made, but this has the features and such I'm looking for. There's also:

And many others, just try googling, but those are some popular ones.

Moveable Type is also one of the main ones. As a person who uses Word Press 1.5, the comment spam handling is very good. I just need to add in the plug in for trackback spam, and I should be one happy camper.
