Linux and Solaris are different operating systems, of which only the latter is actually a UNIX derivative. Linux comes in different distributions, which are sets of additional programs and other features collected together. Examples include Red Hat/Fedora and Mandrake. Most distributions include a graphical desktop environment such as KDE or Gnome.

Personally, I use Mandrake (a distribution) with KDE (a desktop environment), and I've also heard good things about SuSE.

Perhaps you might find this article (http://www.linux.org/lessons/beginner/l1/lesson1c.html) useful.

It Depends on what you are going to use for?
For a desk top use Red Hat 9 or Fedora 3?
If your planning to use it for FTP then use Red Hat 8 or 9
If your planning to use it for web hosting then use Red Hat9/SuSE/Fedora 3
Then put any other programs on top of those!
On my personel computer I use Dual Boot Win 2000 pro/ Red Hat 9
My Web Server uses Red Hat7.3 with RPM upgrades.
MY FTP Server is Red Hat 8.0 with RPM upgrades.
My New Web Server is going to be Red Hat 9 with Plex on top.
I'm Testing SuSE now for an Email Server.
My work Stations in my office are Win 98.
So Like I said It Depends on what you are going to use for?
