I was astonished this morning to find that the forum design had undertook a massive change between the time I went to sleep last night and when I got up this morning!
Overall, I think I like it. There were a few initial concerns I had, but they were cleared up after browsing for a few minutes and getting the feel of the new forum. That is, all but one anyway...
I noticed that character entities are no longer usable because the forum automatically converts any ampersands in your code to their escaped values. Look at my signature! I don't know about the rest of you avid forum users, but I think this poses a problem. Any way we could get this changed forum admin people?

moved to feedback.
personally i think it looks a lot better, with one exception. when you're viewing a particular forum, the ad at the top makes the whole page bunch up on the left, which is visually displeasing.

Exuro, that's a VB3 feature change from vers. 2. Can't do anything about that. There are a few others such as semicolons no longer allowed in usernames either.
Hooray! The issue with the automatic removal of backslashes in PHP-formatted code seems to have been fixed! I'm going back to some old PHP posts to double-check...
$var = preg_replace("/<\"(?:\d+?)\">/", '<"tag">', $var);

what's the deal with the 10 word post limit?
JPnyc

Not 10 words, 10 characters. Anyway I just changed it to 2.

Noes!!! Make it higher... one word posts are bad for my (mental) health. The new layout is a tad irritating, but I guess I can live with it. Also, though it does use more CSS, couldn't the code be cleaner? For example: <table border="0" width="100%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr>
<td>
</td>
</tr> That's just kind of sad. Eh... it'll take some getting used to, that's for sure.

Those are in the VB3 forum software coding, Ben. We don't add em.

ok... now how do I change the avatar ?!

FIM- please delete.
Ben, you have got to use the "Threaded mode." It's totally wicked, man. Sure, it'll take a little getting used to, but I am totally loving it. The multi-view options are great!
Andrew, there should be a "Quick Links" link at the top of each page (on the right-hand side). Click the little arrow next to it and hit "Edit Avatar." Alternatively, you can click the "User CP" link at the top left-hand side of any page and then look at the menu that appears just below it.

Jona (to your second post, not the one directed to me), I said that too, but the interface is a tad confusing... it just offers to remove your old avatar, which is why I decided I had my foot in my mouth... hence the requested deletion.
Now, as for the one that was directed at me, meh. Too many clicks... I glanced at it once, but it doesn't really interest me. The forum needs new buttons, btw... damn, this thing is ugly.
Hmm, you're right, Ben. It must be setup not to allow new avatars to be uploaded or transferred. JPnyc, could this be changed, please?

Well, the new forum layout is familar to me from the "magic the gathering"
forums. I am annoyed that I cannot produce special characters via ampersands anymore but I do like the new tag edition, HTML.
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<SCRIPT>
alert(Math.PI)
</SCRIPT>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
</BODY>
</HTML>

???
those question marks were created with ASCII characters...is that not the special characters you were talking about?

Okay, this is going to take some getting used to.
Other than that, the forum looks a lot cleaner / clearer. I think I like. (^_^)
Take care,
Snitch.
P.S. Not sure about the Smileys yet. Heh.
Agreed on the note about smileys. The older ones had more personality; these look semi-flat, and seem to have lost their expression.

Has anyone else experienced a growth in automatic sign-outs? I've found the the forum logs me out whenever I leave the site, or if I'm inactive for a bit. I set it to remember me, is there another setting I need to select, or a browser option I need to enable? I didn't have this problem with the old layout.

Is "browse board with cookies" checked yes in your profile options?

To be honest, I can't find that area, I've checked in both "edit profile" and "edit options". Where would that be?

Hmm, seems that option was removed in this version. I guess if you're blocking cookies selectively locally, you should check the block list for this domain, and remove it, if it's there. What's the browser?

I've not experienced an unwelcome lockout with the new layout, so I doubt that's it, I used to get them all the time(about once every 10-15 minutes).
Maybe that' just because I'm moving and sending more new request though(because I keep playing with how things look.

I'm current using IE 6.0, and FF on the side. I haven't used the forums with Mozilla yet, and will try that and see if it is any different. Would it be?

Shouldn't. But so far you're the 1st to make this complaint, or at least the 1st that I'm aware of. I certainly have no issues with being logged in or out. If you check cookie handling in IE, internet options>>privacy tab>>advanced button, be sure "always allow session cookies" is checked.

I checked my settings, and changed the allowed size of my cookie folder, as it was basically full. That might have done the trick, and will check the effects when I get home today.

You should probably dump cookies as you would likely have a bunch of extraneous ones taking up space. Every site you still visit that uses em, would replace them.

Yeah, the problem is it fills up again and again with extra crap I don't need. Would it be wise to create a folder containing copies of those cookies which I desired, so when I clear out my cookie folder, I don't have to re-acquire the cookies I had, or selectively delete undesirables from the long list of temporary internet files? (Just a simulated "repair" of my cookie folder)
JPnyc

the way around that is to set your own cookie handling, in IE. You set 1st party to prompt, 3rd party to block, and always allow session cookies. Then you get to say who can deposit a cooke and who cant.
