You should start a new thread for a new question. I'm going to split it and move this thread to the General forum.

To answer your question, it's rare to find hosting of any quality for free without ads.

Freewebs (http://freewebs.com) offer hosting without pop-up ads, just a banner at the top and a textlink back, however they don't offer any server-side capabilites. My Best Host (http://mybesthost.com/) have big ugly ads but no pop-ups and plenty in the way of server side tech.

I've used netfirms.com for several years and they've been consistently good with only the top of page ad banner, usually advertising for themselves. They've got all you need for a simple (non-database) dynamic site, Perl and sendmail.

I believe you can use PHP with them too. I recall you can't hotlink images from there though.

You can't use PHP in the free hosting. Most free hosts dissallow image parking in their TOS because they're ad-funded. That's just to be expected when you're getting something for nothing. The next level up which includes PHP and a database is only $60/yr IIRC.

Try 125mb.com if all you need is a simple site. :)

It's not free, but for a one time $3 payment, www.freepgs.com has decent service with php, mysql, 50 megs of space, unmetered bandwidth (within reason), and ftp. They have other plans which are also on a one-time payment basis.
