Getting data from a form field

Hi

I have a form field that a user clicks on a javascript calendar to fill in the date. I would like to take the information from this field and then use it other javascript processes. One being a simpe write statement to an area of the page, the other being a conversion, but what would be the best way of "capturing" this data into the javascript.
