I was looking to learn javascript and was looking for a good book to learn but more to have as a reference guide. I have already learned PHP so I know the basics about programming and I have read many of the Visual Quickstart Guide books. Is there a better series to learn Javascript or are they fine.

1) "Javascript: A Beginner's Guide" gets high reviews at amazon

2) For a more substantial book, there is "Beginning Javascript(2nd Edition)" (Paul Wilton)

3) The consensus expert's reference is "Javascript: The Definitive Guide" (David Flanagan)

I took a look at "javascript: The Definitive Guide" and it seems very good. However it is a few years old so I was wondering if JavaScript changed alot? Is there any newer one I should buy instead or is this THE ONE??

Well, I've been trying to learn from Negrino and Smith's Visual Quickstart guide and I don't recommend it for a reference. It is great if you want to do the exact lessons they plan for you step by step, and you'll learn a lot that way. But I needed it for practical everyday applications on the job and I've been unsuccessful in finding the answer I need when I need it.

You could always look at my book:

and also the JS Bible

Need a forklift for this book!

I would really recommend going to a book store sitting down and going through books. There are so many out there that have different styles, certain things work for certain people. BUT I would buy it online since it will be cheaper! lol
