Do I need a comiler to wirte Perl or is this something like html where I can use a basic text editor?

I've downloaded Perl 5.8.0 from perl.com ... installed it and WHAM :o Hit a brick wall... this isn't what I was expecting... is there some type of compiler or such that has a graphical user interface?

You can use a basic text editor for any language and compile it. If a syntax highlighting editor is what you want then you're looking for an IDE.

I have also found that the Editplus program works quite well for having highlighted syntax. You can get that at www.editplus.com It is free to download and use for 30 days. And if you like it the price is quite reasonable.
