Hi all
I am plaining to get a new harddrive soon, and I have picked out the seagate Baracuda ST3300831AS. (Seagate is my faveroute brand as I like the design more then speed, because I like them to last longer and all that)
I am going to get it from http://www.abcd.com.au/Osiab/Asp/Frameset.asp
(Fourth one from the bottem)
What do you guys think?
also I hear that if you put in the parrameters of the drive into the bios (instead of having auto) you might be able to get your data off. Do you think this is true?
If that don't work I will just try out puting it in the freezer wrapped in plastic to see if that works
See ya guys and thanks

Your link didn't work for me, but I agree about seagate, they are my fav too. I have had maxtor drives die on me, I have had wd drives die on me, but I have never had any problems with seagate drives or samsung drives.
I do not know what you mean by 'be able to get your data off', but if you do the specs manually you might be able to get a little bit better bandwidth.
What interface are you using? Sata, scsi, ide?

I assume from your post you have a drive which isn't detected by windows, and you want to buy a new one?
Seagate or Samsung are also my personal favourites.
Data recovery: fridge for 3 hours, preferably in a plastic bag. Works every time.
Any cold place will do the job though - one of my friends left his pc in the garage overnight and that did the trick.
Edit: a further point occurs to me: that type of failure is often related to hard drive overheating. It might be a good idea to check your airflow in that corner of the case.

The site keeps changing the site link

one of my previous hard drives was a Quantum Fireball, I was using lots of photoshop at high resolution at the time, when it crashed it would start up ok and five minutes later it would crash, I reboot, and another five to ten minutes it would crash again. This time with that experiance under my belt, I know it is better to disconnect it and wait until I have a new hard drive, in the mean time use a temporary drive.
But that was my data drive,
My Os drive crashed not long before the data one and so I put the os on the data drive and that is what made it crash sooner (and playing games too).

The crashed ones are both IDE, but am plaining to get SATA as my motherboard supports it. and later get another one for a raid.
Thanks for helping

I was working the night before, and next morning it would not boot up. Someone at work suggested to change the drive parameters and there is a chance it would work (So he said). I don't think there is anything to loose by trying is there?

Thats what I was told by my IT teacher.

I have all my hard drives behind two big fans mounted at the bottem front of the case, in an aluminium case.
Thanks guys for helping

I just noticed you said fridge. My teacher said freezer. I had a look on google and found some interesting articals. 200 ways to revive a hard drive is one of them.
Will post a new thread about that if I find that they work with my dead harddrives I have (3).
