I want to buy a domain name of someone. If we had agreed that I would buy it for, for example £10, what should I then do?

They would have to transfer the domain name, into your name. By switching out the WHOIS information, thus giving you "ownership" of this domain.

So how would I do that?

You would have to contact the person who currently owns the domain name now - and have them transfer the domain to you.

GAH, don't use the term "ownership", you only have it for a period of time, so you don't actualy own it, think of it more as leasing(renting)

I attempted to change the "temporary owner' of a domain name I received a pdf document from my hosting provider and told me to do it the paper trail way. Quite a hassel.

May be I can help you do it free, but you'd better do it yourself. It's easy.

You shall ask the person to give you the account name and password,
or you shall first sign up your account and ask the person to push the domain to your account, and then you can change the ownership information.
