I'm just curious. I see many programmers using the hunt and peck method with 2 fingers, and actually type faster than many using "proper" form. Personally, I can type normal stuff without looking, but have to resort to hunt and peck for numbers and special characters.

How much emphasis is put on good typing skills at school now days?

The question comes up mainly because I broke a finger recently and am having a heck of a time typing.

I generaly think and type at about the same speed(much better than writing by hand, by hand I think twice as fast as I write which means I get all mixed up in what I'm writing...), although if I don't keep glancing at the the keyboard every 20-30 seconds I wind up pressing the key's one to the right/left of what I want...

And I use all the fingures on both hands for one thing or antoher(although little fingers are used for shift, controll tab and alt mostly, so I don't use them much...)

Fast enough to keep up with my thoughts :) And it doesn't matter what keys I need to hit -- any ones I need. (^_^)

I can blow away every hunt and pecker I have ever met. I use home row all the way.

How about WPM, guys? Last time I checked (2+ years ago) I was at 72 WPM...

I'm somwhere between 95-115 WPM, with accuracy of around 95-97%, proper typing and all. Although, I do sometimes have to slow down for numbers/symbols. I generally use the 10-key pad to type numbers because it's faster than the other ones.

Him, I generally seem to type around 55-65 WPM. Probably slower than most hear, but I generally tend to make fewer typos. I want to know, how many people here formally learned to type, be it a class or automated tutor or the like, and how many here just picked up typing after using the computer for so long (myself).

I was forced to take two years of typing in Junior High, which is where I learned most form and whatnot. But even in elemetary school, we had to take typing lessons. It's like they imbed it in you from the time your fingers are big enough to press a key.

Last time I checked I was in the 80s. I also use the number pad just because I am often using a cash register and I am just used to it. I can put in my SS on that in 2. something seconds... that is cos I clock in using my ss.

i can type in nick's SS # in about 1.985 seconds.

Last I checked, I was at 90 - 100 wpm.

And I mainly taught myself to type.

Actually I'm kinda fast writing on keyboard, but it takes time from me, to know what to write, but once i know what i wanna write, god helps my keyboard,,,, it will have an extra loading on the keys. by the way, i'm not using 2 fingers, i'm using 9 fingers, i think it finishes work faster.

I'm at around 70-80 WPM, although I tend to slow down if I have to think about something(what I'm typing doesn't make sense)...

Is there any special text to type for wpm?

There are lots of typing programs out there that can give you your wpm. What you could do is just open any word processor with word count and start typing when your clock in your sys tray moves up a minute and stop a few mins later then get the mean.

Urm, well, I got 64wpm on a javascript typing test (http://www.calculatorcat.com/typing_test/). I kind of use hunt-and-peck- I don't look at the keyboard (I glance down for special characters, numbers, typos), and use my thumbs/ring finger for spacing and shifting (for example, when I type "Lol." it's ring finger on shift with pointer on L, then pointer on o,l respectively). I just got into the habit of typing like this over time- by the time my school implemented their half-hearted "learn-to-type" class, it was already drilled in (I did type "properly" for those classes, but it didn't break the habit, and it raped my wpm up the [implied]). I'm not breaking any records, but I do type at a good clip, so I'm not looking to change.

Hum. Took that test several times and got in the 80's. *shrug*

I'm not sure about my speed, by I'd say around 80 with Dvorak and perhaps 65 on qwerty nowadays. (Made the switch about two years ago.)

i tend to get between 85 and 90 this was done as a test in college and at 16 i am kinda impressed by the speed of my typing especialy seen as its typed without looking at the keyboard. Before anyone ask i use my correct finger type methord and have tought my self due to the sheer amount of time i spend on a computer each day. :)

I'm pretty much like you, wamboid; I can touch type without looking at the numbers at a comfortable rate of fifty to sixty words per minute. However I can do eighty words per minute with rather good accuracy if I have/want to.

I do have to take a moment to look at the number keys and symbols. I'm good with exclamation point, the @ sign, asterisks, parenthesis, and quotation marks, periods, and commas... all the other symbols I have to look for. :D

I'm fairly dyslexic and that drags my typing speed down to around 40 words a minute. Doesn't bother me much, quality over quantity, no?
