Nav Bar and Tables

Hi I am new here and working on expanding my abilities with HTML. I have been using html goodies to do that. As I stated in the title I have a question about navigation bars made using tables. My problem is that I want the bar to go to the bottom of the page so that my text doesn't misalign when it becomes longer than the bar. I have seen sites that have a lot of blank space between where text stops on the navigation bar and where the bar ends so I was curious if some one could help me out.

Limit the width of the content area to the same as the menu.
Having the menu at the bottom is illogical.

I think I just figured out what to do and I don't think I explained what I was trying to do very well. Thanks for trying to help though.
