dumb question (domain names)

hello!

i have a small/simple webpage for my band on the space that comes with my internet service(56k) we are now interested in getting a domain name because the url to get to the page is long and our fans cant spell past four letters anyway ... i have found some online places that sell domain names for 12.99 to 15.00 dollars with free url forwarding is this what i need? are there any hidden things i am missing? one person told me i would have to get a static IP but i cant find any info on this
any advice appreciated

all you need is the domain name - you dont need a static ip these days. if you already have hosting somewhere then continue to use that as you;ve suggested.
