Instant Message-Help

I have a website that has instant message intergrated into the scrip but is lacking some capabilities. My question: Does anyone know the scrip that would allow another user to know that he/she is getting an instant message (ie. have the window popup on their computer) Currently the only way that the person knows that you are sending them an instant message is if by chance they click on your profile and the window opens. I would like a pop up to appear similar to how msn instant message works where a pop up window apprears on your computer and displays the message that someone has sent you. Does anyone have any information or suggestions?

I don't think there's anyway to do it instantly, but you could send a value to a database saying that a message has arrived, at which point the next time a user changes pages, it will pop up.
