Not a bad start.
Few pointers.
- Strict DTD should be used on all new sites; Transitional is provided for legacy code.
- Width can use some flexibility, based on both font size and browser window width.
- Switch to a sans-serif font - they are more legible
- Put the same gradient background for your content headers ("Top Stories"), or consider a different color. As is, when they are next to each other right under the site banner, it looks like something is amiss.
- Cure the "divitis". <div id="header"> should be <h1>; <div id="navimageN"> in the navigation section should be <h2> or <h3>, <div id="contentheader"> should be <h2>
- Try a shade of grey page background instead of black.

good work on the layout, cahnge the fonts, backround colours as allready mentioned, and see if you can remove the border around the images, there is 404 dead pages in your content bar... with the backround maybe you could try putting a lined effect in the backround like apple has with darker colours im sure you could do this in paint. www.apple.com

Does the big picture work???
The person is flattened and the couler scheme is not that good.
