most likely nortons is blocking which ever port it is that yahoo messenger uses to communicate on. usually in an IM settings there's something for firewall's and you can enter the password or whatever for it to communicate through it. Either that or find out what port it's talking on, and then allow traffic through that port in nortons.

i actually emailed nortons, and they emailed me back. they wern't very helpful. they told me that seeing that if i disable nortons, i still can't use yahoo, then it isnt really there problem! and that i must contact yahoo.
i have tried to go through various settings on yahoo messenger, but nothing seems to work.

Hello Lauren,

Yahoo's Port is 5050, your local port would be found by opening a DOS Window and typing netstat at the prompt. It will show you all active connections. On mine, it is Port 3098, and that Port varies.

You mentioned you do see your buddy list, so, you are connected to Yahoo. You would not be able to see the list if you are not connected.

Make sure your Yahoo Messenger is the latest version, Norton recommends Version 5.0 or better.

You can also check your firewall program for blocked Domain names or IP's.

Check to see if any of the following are blocked:
msg.edit.yahoo.com
edit.messenger.yahoo.com
csa.yahoo.com
csb.yahoo.com
csc.yahoo.com

Just offhand, it sounds like one of two things. One. Your Yahoo version is an older version, so update.

Two. Yahoo has been bad for some time, the result of script kiddies using boot and flooding programs. You may be on a flooders buddy list, and do not know it. A way to see is to create a new Yahoo identity, and use it to log into messenger. If that works, then your other identity may be suspect.

Please let me know what happens, and feel free to contact me at any time, I'd like to know how it turns out for you.
