i'm about to move over to a new version of my site. i've read some stuff on not using tables for layout, but i'm not really sure exactly how to do it. i could use some help moving to div's. so, i'm looking for some help with that, and any other reviews that people might care to give me. thanks

Matt

hey hey not bad... you're gonna get crap for table layouts, and also, there is too much padding on the sides for a 800x600 resolution, and even without it it would still draw a horizontal scrollbar... other than that not bad...

good work! :)

thanks... i've read alot about why tables are bad in the past few days, so now i'm really trying to learn more css so that i can setup a tabless site since i really dont need them. it seems a bit confusing at first, i was hoping it would be something fairly easy so that i can get this new design up and running.

ok, i just made a non tables version of the site. its just got placeholder text in there right now, but i've got a ssi menu in place so it basically looks like it will when content is added.

i would like to at this point get some pointers on making it look a bit "flashier" without alot of graphics.

i also realize it doesnt validate yet, i'll fix that when i get off work.

Yeah it doesn't look that flashy or anything. But it is valid XHTML 1.0 transitional. Mine's all flashy but not valid, working on it though.

i still like it, but it just looks plainer... which isn't always bad you know... your footer doesn't span all the way across the #container...

not bad.
try writing the <h2> outside the <p> tag, and do not put one <p> in another <p>

very good !
looks nice, clear... I like it !
A few comments, though ;
justify the text. A text which is not justified looks messy.
On the bio page, the image needs padding, it's glued to the text, which is not really nice...
Other than that, really nice website ! I like the soft colors...

oh, about colors, maybe you should use something else than the red, i dont think it really fits with the design, maybe you could use the blue at the very top of the gradient background as background-color of your menu when you hover

I agree with LCF. I forgot it while writing my post, but the bright red on the menu ( hover ) was disturbing me, cause it's the only not pastel color...
blue, or a orange-red shade of pale yellow ( I see the color in my head, but I can't explain it more... ) would be better. It would suit the rest of the site better.

I wold like to see the logo / title of site on topleft,
Highlight nav link that is active
add a bit of color.
move signup to top right, this will bring up the page a bit on bottom.
add someborders..here is a
Example (http://www.define-web.com/temp/tempwork.jpg) i made for you to look at.

wrong use of the title... your not giving them a title think about it...
the reason why i just write articles on things is that they get so repedative to explain all aspects. so now i just write articles which i link to. http://fabio.ugtech.net/webdev/46/using-the-title-tag-correctly read.

hey, that seems like a really good article. i'll wait til my boss leaves for the night and then read it. and yes, i started using the new version of the site, and added the redirect so either link will still work.

hey ,i'm just curious... was your issue with my title the use of the "/" symbol without using html codes for it? i didnt realize that would mess with some browsers, and my page passed the w3 validation, but at your advice i did change it to use the &xx; style code.

you dont need to translate the forward slash will work either way. there isnt a translation for forward slash it remains the same i think.
