I went through it and it didn't work, I have MSIE 5.0+, but that isn't what I was wondering about. I know I can see favicons because I see it with other sites, but when I added this site to my favorites, your favicon didn't show up. Just the e for internet explorer.

Internet Explorer is buggy. Plain and simple, version 6.0 is extremely outdated as it is, 5.0 even more so. Favicons won't display on the address bar, only in your favourites. Think it has to do with a security patch or something where they decided to kill functionality instead of fixing the problem or something along those lines. At any rate, I don't know if IE 5 supports favicons at all (Why are you using IE 5 at all?).

I've got a problem with favicons... I was looking at a site (I forget which one) that provided free favicons and would display them for me. I don't remember what I did, and now my entire robotics team for which I am webmaster of says they see a favicon in the address bar and in the favorites menu. Furthermore on the FTP server for the site, there is the favicon.

My question is, how did that site get the favicon onto the server without all the FTP passwords and stuff? (I never gave those out, and I have them memorized)
Also, why can I not see the favicon? (I use IE5, but not for long. Soon I'll be using IE6 or firefox.)
AND how can I get rid of the favicon? I don't like it because I don't know how it got om the server! Freaky the whole thing is. Well, here is that site. I think the favicon only works on the homepage but I may be wrong. http://www.team847.com/

The favicon is here. http://www.team847.com/favicon.ico Good browsers will request it even if there's nothing in your html that says where it is.

You must have uploaded it... To get rid of it delete the favicon file.

Even though IE doesn't "do" favicons, for some reason the plethora of IE shells out there seem to. I guess they all decided to add the functionality themselves.

I disagree with the HTML Goodies tutorial. Your favicon doesn't have to be named favicon.ico. My current favicon is named favicon2.ico, and it still works. I had a favicon named myfavicon.ico, and it worked. I also disagree that you HAVE to have your favicon in your root folder. I have one in /txp/images/favicon2.ico, and it works.

Cool! But still, does anyone know how to get rid of a haunted favicon?

Rename your current favicon to something else than favicon.ico.

Well, I'm not as good with computers as you guys but, if that site keeps putting that favicon in your file manager, why don't you delete it then name an empty file by the same name as that favicon because you can't have the same file twice.

Well, actually I don't think that would work although it is a great idea.
The broswer tries to get the file favicon.ico & it has to have the file extension ico.
Ya know, the really funny thing about all this is the fact that I have never seen this favicon. Could it have been that one site that put it there? Weird...

Figure this out and you win the Golden Web Award

I have placed favicons in my root folder and in all my directory folders on my web site.

In Netscape 7.2 go to http://www.neilslade.com/favicon.ico
and you will see my little RED and BLUE EYE icon.

In Netscape 8.0 on my LAPTOP you see the icon, and its displayed in the browser as well from all the other pages on my site, and in the address/location bar like it should. Same thing using Netscape 7.2

In Netscape 8.0 on my DESKTOP you see NOTHING. No place, not on the page, not in the address bar, nothing nothing. I've even reinstalled Netscape.

In IE explorer you see NOTHING in either the laptop or my desktop
in either bookmarks, page, or location bar. Nowhere, just the RED X signifying it does not exist.

Is it: the correct size, palette and format, in the root directory and have a link to it on each page?
Still not seeing it? Delete the shortcut, restart the browser and add the shortcut.
