I am looking to make a web graphic, with transparent background.
i would like it to be a gradiant color, fading from transparent to black.
when i do this, i get a white or grey to black fade.
any help?
are you using a .gif or .png format?
.jpg doesn't support transparency

none of the browsersupported images supports partial transparency
the only way to make this effect is to create an image that contains the underlying part of the backgroundimage

PNG supports partial transparency but IE6 doesn't properly support PNG (IE7 should though).
