I am sorry to have to ask this question as I can see that it has been asked an awful lot in this forum, but I cannot find any mails specifically about UK hosting companies, the majority are about U.S.A based companies.
I am desperate for recommendations as I want to get away from UK2 a.s.a.p.
I can of course trawl the web, but God, there are so many and of course they all say they are great.... so does UK2.net.....
Any ideas would be very gratefully appreciated, but please do not recommend your own companies to me.
Thanks for any advice.
Cheers.

Hostroute.net Ltd (http://www.hostroute.net/)
Not for newbies, as I learned over months, but very supportive. And now I wouldn't leave them.
UK, USA, and Canada, soon to open office in Scotland.
Good Luck, Ray!

Hi,
I've been using http://www.btsnet.co.uk for over two years and havent had any problem with them. They are affordable (they also offer a free option) and support is very good.

They have great prices, the smallest package for £30 a year, you get unlimited email addresses, unlimited mysql databases and also a free .com domain.

I'm now using www.ukhost4u.co.uk for one of my sites and they seem good.
Their basic hosting package is £39.99 and for that you get...
1Gb storage space, 50Gb monthly bandwidth, unlimited subdomains, unlimited FTP, unlimited email and more.
My only critiscm would be that when registering they automatically select a few paid extras, which you have to ensure you deselect if you don't want to pay more. Also the domain name registration isn't the cheapeast if you're looking for UK domains (eg. .co.uk).
EDIT: I think I spoke too soon, whilst the package is good it would seem their support leaves a bit too be desired. Their favourite line for problems is "the server ### site is on is a 64bit linux and you need to contact your script vendor". Though in fairness they finally sorted the problem I had after I spent the best part of a week persisting that it had nothing to do with being on a 64bit, explaining what the error message meant, and one of their technical people finally admitted that the problem was due to a module not updating (which I had told them for nearly the start). I guess when you pay so little for a seemingly good package you can't expect brilliant support.
EDIT 2: Scrap the recommendation I made for UKHost4u, I moved my site to www.eUKhost.com after a couple of months as I was fed up with them. EUKHost have been great so far.

It really kind of depends on your website, it's usage and the technology you are using on it.
It is good to ask around fellow web developers you know and also search for reviews about hosting companies you are considering using on google before you decide to trust them with your website, they really need to have proven reliability and good support.

I had nothing but problems with eukhost, but that is going back a few years and then made the switch to UK2.net......
Granted, they were a poor service to start off with, but they seem to have sorted themselves out recently and I'm not having anymore problems with them for what I need

I think I've seen some positive review for unitedhosting.co.uk in the past. But I do not understand why are you "desperate" if there are some uk search engines or web service and web design magazines that offer listings of web hosts.

£5 per month ! £60 a year ! CAP LIMITS !!!
If you want an unlimited bandwidth , unlimited space and unlimited emails for less than £5 a month, talk to me...
If you want dedicated hosting, you will find that theirs a huge price leap.
Forgot to mention, the fees also cover domain name too and none of this credit card bull where your host just takes annual fees, you get the option to renew yourself and if you do not want hosting after that expiry date, you do not renew...
Forget fasthosts.co.uk as they will take a payment regardless of your wishes.
All I can say about them is if you only intend on having 12 months with them, ensure that once you have paid them for 12 months and before your renewal, go to your bank, declare your debit / credit card as lost / stolen and they issue you a new card which will have a different issue number than the one in the site you just coughed up for and this prevents them from taking a payment when you do not want to continue with them.
You will find that they pester you and try to take payments regardless of your stated wishes.
TBH I am glad I got them out my hair, as a provider, one word... sh1t.

Avoid NAMESCO and sister companies like 123domainnames as this group of companies are a complete rip off.
They want £11.50+VAT per domain name to transfer a domain name to another provider.
My ex-partner bought two domain names and was charges £90 for the pleasure of and I pointed out that she should have listened to me about transfer to another provider when it came to expiry time.
The excuse that they give is that the process requires administration to unlock the account and they then transfer to the other provider.... BULL POO, COW CHIPS or whatever you prefer to call it... it stinks. Why? Because they should only supply the Auth code or EPP code required and the other host then transfers the name in to their own namespace.
This is why I keep on barking about the whole industry needs severe regulation against rip off merchants like namesco.
The host I have advised her to go to only charge £1 to £6 for a domain transfer in which I can understand as they are doing all the work.

http://www.uk-cheapest.co.uk/
You have to remember that any trade issue when you purchase a service in another country will make it near on impossible to get any kind of help other that from a solicitor / lawyer if your in another country.
The other issue I am seeing is everyone's suggestion for UK hosts all have cap limits or charge allot per month for what they offer or expect additional fees for services like databases, email and server-sides...
The host I use for the past 2 years now has proven to me at least that you CAN have professional hosting on the cheap. To put the cost in to perspective, my hosting costs are less than 9p a day, the one in the quote above, more than 42p a day on the unlimited service and your STILL CAPPED on services.
CAPPED = you have traffic limits or web space caps
LIMITS = services like email, database, etc.
http://www.uk-cheapest.co.uk/ - top package, 42p a day, CAPPED, LIMITS
http://www.clook.co.uk/ - top package 39p a day, CAPPED, crap limits
http://www.eukhost.com/ - completely unrealistic prices. £1.06 a day, CAPPED, LIMITS
http://www.servage.net/ - 18p a day, CAPPED, LIMITS
http://www.pipeten.com/ 76p a day, CAPPED, LIMITS not UK hosting despite advertising
http://www.fastsites.co.uk/ - 93p a day, CAPPED, LIMITS
http://www.ukhost4u.com/ - 20p a day, CAPPED, LIMITS
http://www.lcn.com/ - 15p a day, CAPPED, LIMITS
http://www.ukreg.com/ - 19p a day, CAPPED, LIMITS
http://www.evohosting.co.uk/ - 24p a day, CAPPED, LIMITS
http://www.webfusion.co.uk/ - 29p a day, CAPPED, LIMITS
http://www.wiserhosting.com/ - 42p a day, CAPPED, LIMITS
This is only a cursory look at costs of packages that were either business or pro or the first package that was not aimed at the the home user.
In every case, cap limits or limitations on service were present and in some cases the traffic limits would easily be exceeded if the design of the site was one that relied upon lots of graphics.
You have to remember that you have people on-line that do not respect your traffic allowances and will hot-link to your content, images, graphics, anything to save themselves having to get, upload and code in properly and burden the traffic cost themselves... This happend to a friend who had a fansite and they were landed with a $300 bill because someone had hot-linked to her video content, she only knew because she made the company tell her what URL was the referrer and she found the site. Turned out exactly as I warned her, a script kiddie making a fansite and they were collecting email addresses in return for offering up her content!
So be warned, buying too cheap can cost you.

I just launched a site using uk-cheapest
For small sites its not bad and the domains are pretty cheap (was about £6 for 2 years for a .co.uk) and they're a range of packages. Some people said it should be avoided but out of 2 reported issues they got back to me pretty fast, and everything seems ok with them right now :)
On the other hand, I also work with fluent.ltd.uk which is several hundred a month but have very very good service.

The issue IS NOT the size of your site, it is to do with how much traffic gets burnt when some t*sser script kiddie hot links to your content.

Personally I'm a fan of the bigger webhosting sites, but then again each one offers something slightly different. It really depends on what you’re looking for and then you can choose the right webhost for you. I'm personally a fan of green hosting. Do you guys know of good green hosts?

Whichever uk web host you choose, just make sure they offer at least 99.95% uptime guarantee, 30-day money back guarantee, various features, multiple scripting languages and 24/7 customer support via multiple channels. These are the most important things you should ask to the web hosting providers before signing up with them.
