What can I do to make sure that my website is being discovered by and entered into the search databases of search engines like Google? I just want more people to find my site.

Make sure you have links pointing to your site. You only need 1 and Google will find ya. SEOs claim that it is no longer necessary to submit your site to the search engines. So just bear that in mind.

you might need to sumbit to msn. i find that they don't pick up those links.

Google Sitemaps is a great idea but not ideal for newbies.
Build links by submitting to Directories would get you started into the right direction.

I’ve never submitted a site to the search engines. The best way to get yourself indexed is to track down some reputable links related to your subject matter and wait. If you get your hands on some good links its likely Google will make a trip through your site every day or two. The same links will also get you on the other major search engines including Yahoo and MSN. I have never had to submit and my sites show on every major search engine thanks to their inbound links.
