Getting the date from SNTP server

Within the last few days there was a post asking about getting the date from anyplace but the client. I had found some information about changing your PC's date from a USNO server, and also some info about the NTP (network time protocol) and SNTP (simple NTP). I looked around for an inventive way of opening a stream and getting the date without server-side code, but I did not see anything promising.

Is there anything client-side that I've overlooked that would do this?
