Hi everybody! My family is getting a new computer soon. I made this thread because I had some questions about IE6 and firefox... Well, here goes.
Thanks in advance!
The "information bar" in IE6 is annoying and I know my dad won't be too happy with it. I have heard from everybody that firefox is a better browser. I already know why, but what I want to know are these things:
1. The IE6 information bar is annoying! Does firefox have anything like that? Does it let scripts run freely? (Just the ones it deems safe)
2. If I install Firefox, will it delete IE6?
-Will the IE6 shortcut stay on the desktop?
-Will I be able to run IE6 still?
3. Does Firefox allow for FTP folder view?
4. Will firefox work with the current Macromedia flash and shockwave plugins I already have, or will I have to download ones made for FF?
5. Will the favorites menu I have on my current computer be compatible with firefox?
6. Is there any setup for Firefox that I have to go through? (Will the plugins and everything else work right off the bat?)

1. Yes it has a status bar but it is just that, a status bar... not a n00bz can alter me bar
2. No, Yes if you like, Yes (but hopefully you would use it only for testing)
3. No, It will display a list of directory contents but will not act as an ftp client like windows explorer. However, you can do ftp with filezilla
4. At first flash will not work but right when you go to a site that uses flash you will be prompted to install the plugins... ff has a built in installer so that is quick and painless.
5. Yes, you can import bookmarks.
6. No, not really.

So you are saying that it has something like the "information bar" and it will do the same thing as IE6?
If you are referring to the area at the bottom that tells you what link you are hovering over or says done when a page is done loading then yes.
OK... Is that the same for the Java plugin?
Yes But if you experience any trouble via FF installer then you can always go to Sun's site and install it from there. The installation is pretty quick and painless, unlike the problems you may face by running it :p
I cannot stand Java

So, I mean that yellow bar that appears at the top of the page saying something like "This page cannot be displayed properly" or something like that.
Ok, just a few more questions... By Java, I mean Java Script. Is that the same thing and if not, it should do it's installer thing, right?

Are there any other browsers that will work? I've heard of Opera but know nothing about it.

So, I mean that yellow bar that appears at the top of the page saying something like "This page cannot be displayed properly" or something like that. Oh you mean the popup blocker... man I couldn't live without it lol. If there is one thing that will get me to leave a site with the quickness it is more than one popup.

Java you need to install. JavaScript you do not. No they are not the same not in the least. ;)

No, I don't think it is the popup blocker. It kills javascript on each site that you view until you click it and say "Allow scripts" or something like that.
Will I need Java? Will it come pre-installed on a new computer wiht IE6?

So, from what I understand about firefox is this:
It takes some time to get it set up, but when it is it works great, blocking popups, not allowing bad javascripts and works better overall. Am I correct?

FF works just fine out of the box. But the opportuniuties for tinkering with the configuration are endless.

Hi Sunny G,
here's some info to get you started fast......
- Download the latest version of firefox from www.mozilla.org
- Close all programs and then double click the firefox setup program
- Choose 'Custom Install', accept the default program installation
location
- 'Select Components' dialog, choose 'Quality Feedback Agent' (this
reports any problems to the development team, so they can improve
firefox).
-click next
-Choose shortcuts you want firefox to create
-finish the installation and let FF launch
- a box asking you where to import Settings
and Data from. This is your chance to import your favourites, passwords,
and history from IE
- Firefox will ask is you want it to be your default browser. Tick the
'Check at start up next time too' box and click yes. This will ensure
firefox always checks to ensure it is the default browser, just in case
IE tries to reclaim that role for itself!
Your done!
you to still use IE to go on microsoft sites

Installing either Firefox or Opera is quick and painless. It will not in any way affect Internet Explorer, and out of the box, they both support Javascript. Javascript and Java are two TOTALLY different entities. Java comes standard on most OS's (used to come with Windows, don't know if it still does. Very simple to install, though). You can easily install plugins for Firefox, no worries.
If by that yellow symbol in IE, do you mean the alert when there are Javascript errors? Firefox doesn't alert you to it. It can alert you when popups are blocked, but you can disable the annoying notice. Firefox's out-of-the-box pop-up blocker is great (and Firefox 1.1 brings even more improvements) The sheer amount of customibility and extensions available for Firefox might keep you from opening IE again. But you still can, easily, if needed.

OK MstrBob!
So from what I understand, Java and Javascript should work right out of the box and I can install Shockwave and Flash right afterwards.
This is your chance to import your favourites, passwords,
and history from IEOne itsy bitsy teeny weeny nagging little detail--I don't think firefox can import favorites, passwords and history onto a seperate computer.
If by that yellow symbol in IE, do you mean the alert when there are Javascript errors?Yup. That's it!

firefox will not allert you about js errors in the same way ie would. Infact firefox renders javascript differently in many ways.

Infact firefox renders javascript differently in many ways.Better, worse or does it depend on the script itself?

Better, worse or does it depend on the script itself?
 Firefox doesn't render javascript differently, doesn't really "render" it at all. It does have better DOM support though, but that's just an interface.
