ICANN wants to create a .mobi address for sites for mobile phone and pda users. How depressing... Websites are meant to be accessed by everyone and are supposed to be accessed by any medium. Websites should not form around specific hardware. That goes against everything that I've learend about the theory of accesibility. At least Tim-Berners Lee is going to go down swinging....

Aye. I agree. I don't see how it will benefit anyone. I'd actually argue that it would be counter-productive. It'd just encourage already lazy designers to be yet more lazy and ignorant.

Hush... it creates MORE WORK for you - designing a differant website specifically featured to mobile/pda users. It keeps you working, quiet and join the other lemmings :p

Considering how much more work this is gonna take, I wonder if this is actually ever going to take off. If you get "mobile devises" like cell phones GOOD at rendering HTML, I think all of a sudden .mobi will disappear. And I honestly don't think that it will be long before they do well with HTML.

The phones are only getting smaller, though. I wonder how we are going to get accessible websites on a 100x100px screen...

Should be no problem with the microscopic font sizes that seem to be de rigueur these days.

Well, when you're talking small screens, the eye's the limit. I think a 100X100 px screen would be considered unsuitable for the Internet. Period.

It seems unlikely to last. It will probably be relegated to special purposes but not be a functional "part of the web." The display of cell phones just won't support a decent website (now, at least). So I don't think it'll be a big deal.

Couldn't agree more. I honestly believe that accessibility must be tempered by what is practical. I can't imagine it being practical to code a website so it would look good on a 100X100 px screen, beyond what you can do for Lynx. Another Top Level Domain won't do it. Period.

Do not forget about all those "weirdos" out there who think "eye pieces" will become the standard fashion accessory down the road. Thus, giving you a much larger viewing area. :D
I wonder how long it will be for technology to catch up with sci-fi. 3D/Holographic televisions, teleportation, Having a robot or two to help out around the house, and how long till people will b*tch and complain about "robot rights" and the likes. :p
I kinda like how the US wants to go back to the moon and mars, but yet we still cant even fix the problems we have in our own country first.
