upload progress bar

someone asked this in another board i frequent, and there's been a big thumbs down from them.

Is there any way that you can do an upload progress bar on a site without using flash (ie java's okay, javascript, server side all good) for uploading files from a form? THe concensus on the other board seemed to be probably not, but there is that progress bar that appears in the status bar of IE, so there must be some way of doing it - anyone any ideas or experience in this?

Did u mean any thing like this?And yes there si progress bar thing in Java as well

well yes, something like that, only something thats not actually a gimmick would be great. Anyone written one that actaully does something other than count down?
