After the Why so many languages... discussion degenerated into ASP.NET vs PHP, I thought it might be interesting to start a new discussion.

So, where is the future, Sun's Java, Microsoft's .NET or open source LAMP? Do you see any of these dying out in, say, 10 years? Or is there enough space for everybody?

I have no idea what will actually happen. Here are some thoughts that come to mind:

- The current thinking of good design will fade out over the next 5 years. Tier-seperation will become important.
- I don't feel that any of the mentioned will dominate with a shaking fist.
- People, in this hobbyist environment, will only get more one-sided and automated in their views. I can see a very grim and unproductive future in this respect.

Regards.

Well I am not sure about any thing dying in next 10 years or so but I know one thing that Microsoft .NET is not going any where for the next decade

They all have enough of a niche to survive, though. Java, for its power, current wide-spread use, and cross system capability. Code once, deploy everywhere means cheaper production costs. What company wouldn't like cheaper production costs?

The .Net framework is powerful in its own right, and MS really wants to make it THE way to develope apps for Windows. With such a huge marketshare, .Net is here to stay.

Time has taught that the OS community isn't going to up and disappear. Open Source can mean lower production costs for companies as well. It's also very popular with computer enthusiasts, and Open Source seems generally capable of delivering very interesting, and competitive (though not marketing wise) products.

Really, unless Sun, Microsoft, or the Open Source community did a serious screw up, I think they're going to coexist together. Take advantage of what you can, you know? I can't see into the future, there may be a new competitor to emerge, who can really tell?
