I can't vouch for the validity of this site (http://www.stopie.com/removingie/) , but you may want to at least check it out.

If I recally correctly, that will break the windows update functionality.

Why do you want to bother?

Why do you want to bother? This is a good question. Why do you want to remove IE? It is needed to use the http://update.windows.com site.

If you do not want to use it--then do not use it.

If you want to stop it from coming up when you click links, set your alternate browser as the default.

Many of us hate it. So we ignore it--until we need it to test our Web pages for IE compatibility.
