I have been asked to design, develop, and implement a custom web application that handles client database, project management, task management, time tracking, bug tracking, and client billing. Of course *they* want it done in a month and don't want to be involved. I haven't done this level of design before and my web application experience is minimal at best. I am kind of stuck trying to find an approach that is technically-oriented enough that I can get something useful to the developer but will also allow me to show my progress more visually (for the less technically-oriented *they*). I usually get involved in projects after this stuff is already laid out.

How big are we talking here? Just designing a larger system will take over a month.

What sort of help have you got? You may want to acquire the expertise of a more experienced developer. Mayby you could break the system into modules and agree on a deadline for each. As a module is completed, it is incorporated into the working system.

I would otherwise recommend the Extreme Programming (http://www.extremeprogramming.org/) methodology.

Of course *they* want it done in a month and don't want to be involved.*They* are idiots. That could easily be 2-3 man-years of effort.
