Every time I start up my screwed up pc i always have it trying to install an ethernet controller, which it doesn't need to b/c my computer is already hooked up to the internet and i've gotten on the internet tons of times. Is there a way to keep this from trying to install every time i start up my pc. I have looked into this issue myself before but i couldn't find anything that would work. I think windows messed up during it's installation on the pc because when i try to run msconfig, nothing appears. And i'm pretty sure that's a way most people can remove things from starting up. Also its a windows 2000 pc.

Hi TravisMath,
If WinBlows is repeatedly trying to install the ethernet system files..then.. you definitely have a "bum" Windows installation AND/OR configuration setup.
Many things can cause this ranging to bad HD sectors to bad Windows install CDs to "operator/user error" during the installation process.
Just backup your stuff. Run a HD diagnostic (NOT scandisk) and then if everything is OK..re-install Windows.
If the problem re-occurs..suspect a bad Windows install CD.
Hope this is clear
