Hi,
I have a commercial site that I want to promote, I know this is very broad, but what is the best, most effective, non spam way of going about this.
The site has a backend that enables you to add meta tags but is there other text, tags that I should put into the pages to ensure it is picked up?
Which are the best search engines to submit to?
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
Si. :D

you need to submit to as many web directories as you can find. there are hundreds out there. make sure your code is search engine friendly. another point to rememebr is this, google employes a maturity equation in their algorithm whichs means that your site will not beign to rank until the URL has proved that it will be around for awhile. all too often URLs are picked up by google and then the sites are taken down.

Hi there,
Thanks for the info.
Lets assume that the site is search engine friendly are there any other big steps to take?
I've seen free software that claims it can sumbit your site to all manner of search engines in one easy submission. Are these for real, do they work.

i have used software and i have been let down. many search engines and directories require that you enter a verification code. the software is unable to take this step. you SHOULD submit by hand. you will see far better results. I recently went live with a site on May 19th. today is August 4th and my link pop is already over 10,000. this was done by hard work hand submissions. submission software can never get you this type of result, no matter how easy it would be to just press a button.

Thats a fair comment. Hardwork it is then.
What directories would you suggest I target first and what is link pop? :D

i would not be surprised if some software submission tool company comes on this site and tries to rebut this statement.

Automated search submissions are generally not effective except in generating a ton of spam email for the "submitee". Look at it this way... the difficulty in obtaining a link is directly related to the value of that link. So....harder to get links from directories or other sites are generally more valuable.
