okay... this is the unofficial and temporary home of those who don't mind inane chatter
(formerly located at:

Anyway... that's why this thread exists (for now).
And... aside from the inane chatter of those from the old thread, we plan on creating a communal and irrelevant and non-serious website devoted to not being relevant or serious (constructed by the twisted - and positive - minds of those who haunt this very forum).
Eventually
So... you either get it, or you don't... so please don't feel obligated to participate... but... definitely always feel welcome to do so :)
All open and warped minds are welcome.
PLUS - and pay special attention to this Havik! - if you know any really cool music... we really want you to contribute!
okay..
i'll just let this thread take-on it's own form from here.
i'll catch up with this later.
dangerous... but not serious...

This is a WebDev forum, but the other post wasn't deleted, so I guess they don't mind too much... Programmers like to have fun, too! :p Okay, www.dancetech.com has tons of MP3s that are really great. (Let me explain: Click on the "Music" button on the top frame to your right after the page loads, then you can search for music or click on the select box to choose a type of music.)
Um... I still have no earthly idea what the site should look like... I--uh--really---umm.... need to, uh, know--what it, uh, should... Umm... look--look like? ;)

Gday All,
I feel that I had a part in creating this insanity after I altered the mineds of web programmers with the idea of a money tree. Which then created a debate that turned sour, which has now ended up here.
And its great to be here, How about we go for a different approach on greating this site, example. Lets decide on the title first, then relavent colors for the site, then style and choice of coding.
I still like the title, RUNNING WITH PASTE Its a twist on the original saying and its a reminder on how it all started.
Ill stop here and wait for more posts.
lora_3677

RUNNING WITH PASTE would be a cool title for the site and you're right CW, it will remind us all of our 'roots'. ha ha.
as for as color/design.. i think it needs to be fun yet not obnoxious... and can we try to find a location that doesn't have 20 popups upon entering, please.
btw, Jona.. i have looked around in your files and found a cool toy (3d graphic maker), that is really neat. I'm also sorry for not getting back with you, i have been looking, just not sharing. I, like Khaki, have several projects going right now and I'm trying to find time for everything... so I will be glad to help with whatever
Oh yeah, one last note.. i was also thinking that maybe we do need to add a disclaimer at the bottom of the page stating that the facts seen are not actual statistical data and are solely based on opinions... it would be horrible if some student trying to find stats to back up a theory used our site for a basis. LOL!! then again, it would also be hilarious!!!!
and for those of you who haven't seen me around... sorry.. you are cursed with another rambler (Khaki is my hero! :p )

Sorry for the two replies in a row thing but... i just thought of something..
If the title is RUNNING WITH PASTE.... we could use the colors off the Elmer's glue bottle... it was the most famous paste to eat when i was in school! ha ha. but honestly, that could be an option....

Had a look for Elmers, which I found.
Elmers Washable Paste (http://www.elmers.com/PRODUCT_INDEX/product_page.asp?pCode=E505A)
I also went looking for Clag Glue, an Australian Brand. Wird enough I found this

But worse was the first result listed for Clag

WOW! I've been reading some of the 'glueeaters' comments on the Glue Eating Form Results page. I think we are going to learn alot about our society with this project. ha ha... not sure if that is a good thing.... i'm thinking I may want to be sheltered...LOL!!
One of the results stated 'i like colored glue the best'... so i'm thinking hmmmmm.... we could even incorporate some of the colors or glitter glues into this... we could do a breakdown between stats like: 'Glitter glue tends to leave more residue on your teeth and esophogus, therefore death is more likely because of the build up over time.' ha ha, just thinking off the top of my head here... anyway...
We need to include the RUNNING WITH SCISSORS thing too.
OH!! We could base the whole page on schoolroom hazards!
When I was in first grade this kid kept tipping his chair (who didn't!!) and then he fell and hit the desk behind him and cracked his skull! He never came back to school and until i was in HS i thought he died, but he just moved. ha ha.
I'm just brainstorming here... no idea is insignificant. hee hee:rolleyes:

Now it's my turn to contribute!
I see that there's a website going up. Are you looking at simply putting up plain text and html? Or are you going for graphics, interactivity, etc... (bells and whistles my boss calls them).
I could offer a few designs if you like, just give me a moment to dream up a few.
Another thing is the music. There's this local station here that plays really good music:
http://www.freq107.com
I couldn't get the listen online feature to work but maybe you can. But in case, here's a few more songs to check out:
kutless - Run
Trik Turner - Sacrifice
12 stones - the way I feel ( check out "fade away" as well )
Unloco - failure ( think I posted this somewhere one already )
Skillet - kill me heal me
That's all for now, if you like I'll post more, if not then I'll take my music elsewhere :D

first of all... jdavia is hilarious to suggest that I (me!) would set-up everybody else to make a fool of themselves here before I would be willing to do so myself.
I mean... haven't I done enough of that to myself around here in this forum already?
Yikes! You give me too much credit for devious thinking jdavia (actually, I was just really hungry and needed to cook something quick for dinner so that I could kick-back and watch Bill OReilly on The Factor :) .
Okay... so anyway... now that you guys really have made fools of yourselves ;) ... now I'm really ready to jump-in!
Chopper! You kick *ss! That's absolutly classic! I vote that we use it (how could we not?!). As-is...or as a watermark background? Something.
As far as design... please don't look at me! I work with data, forms, reports, graphs, etc.
I would consider my design style to be "Dry Business Formal".
This site needs fun... and I'll be happy just to get the opportunity to work with people who have any sense of style at all :) .
As far as a location... my brother has half-abandond one of his sites (and he already has given me my own folder). Maybe he will give us a folder for this too? (except that he would never permit anyone else to upload files to it... just so you know). Does anyone else have a site that is free of ads and such?
oh crap. it's nearly 11am... i need to prepare for a conference call.
keep plotting... i'll catch-up in a bit.

I'm going to get Photoshop in a few days. Then I'll be able to make pictures like y'all...
I think the title of it should be, "Running" and the slogan, "with paste or scissors, we don't care." :D
Oh, and I think that the color of the site should definitely be blue, orange, and white; just like Elmer's glue. I mean, I don't eat paste, and never have (although, I've accidentally eaten whole napkins with my doughnuts :o), but I like the idea and the name... So let's go for it!
Yah, my stupid subdomain--I wasn't using it, I'm probably going to delete it. Sorry, I don't have any sites that I own that don't have popup ads on them... I never paid for a domain. :p I just don't have the money right now :( But oh well. ;) (All those smilies!)
Anyways, we should change the "Elmer's Glue" logo to say, "Running" and a little below it, "with paste or scissors, we don't care." Or something like that. Maybe Running With Paste, but, whatever, you know.

first:
glad to hear that Jona is getting Photshop (late b'day present?)
(did you ever get Dreamweaver or anything yet? :( )
second:
Lora's new avatar is purrr-fect!
third:
there are so many great ideas and graphics... how will we ever pick any?
fourth:
Chopper's link to the paste eating site is really spooky (you really are very twisted, aren't you Chopper? i like that!)
fifth:
jdavia needs to report-in to the thread again (hello?!!!)
sixth:
it's nice to have xx in the mix!
seventh:
Havik's tunes (from a previous thread) are still rocking my world (i haven't checked-out the new link yet)
eighth:
i don't think there is a eigth, so we'll stop with 7.
maybe more later.. but...
what's the next step?
(we really need to organize)
oh... and let's not forget we need some actual content (other than links).
I thought of a good story idea today while in the middle of a chat with Lora (i'll try to expand on that in the next day or two).
Anyone else got stories/stats in the works?
so...
what next....?

AAAAAAAAAAnyways.... I think we first need a title. Have we decided on Running With Paste?

jdavia reporting sir! I mean khaki.
I got lost in making imatation fire flys, (flashing lights) for my daughter's yard. we have none in Az. (She wants them).
I think a multi color animated background of pastel colors that change every 15 seconds. With a set of tables that are staggared. Every other call will have a blinking border.
Maybe the "Running With Paste" should run down into a puddle. I actually tried all these.
What is the name of the site?
Where will it be?
Who will be the webmaster?
Maybe I missed something, I don't know.
Can Karaoke be played on the internet? That has kept me busy lately too. I think I seen a site long ago on the web that did.

You know what? I think we should go all-out and use like super-DHTML... I mean, just since this site is for fun... Let's see how many good DHTML scripts we can come up with and apply them (reasonably) to the site? Wanna? Hey, I can make a Javascript intro (instead of Flash intro)... I've got the knowledge. :p Want me to? I can!! I can do music in the background and all!! Boy... I'm exciting myself! :p I'm almost daring myself to do it... :o
Well, I'm gonna say "Running with Paste" as the title and Elmer's glue colors. If anyone has any objections, speak now or forever hold your HTML! Because I'm not going to re-make the intro once I finish it...
Tell me what you think guys!!!

Elmer colors look good to me, im picturing, blue borders, orange trim and the white background.
Anyways, we should change the "Elmer's Glue" logo to say, "Running" and a little below it, "with paste or scissors, we don't care." Or something like that. Maybe Running With Paste, but, whatever, you know.
I also like this Idea Jona, im going to give it a go if you dont mind :D

jdavia: Totally dig the running with paste pooling into a puddle down the side of the screen! like a glue bottle that has been turned on it's side. I have been checking out all the new products elmer's is in to... the have glue that doesn't run.... making a mess was always part of the fun?! what are they thinking!!! ha ha.
Khaki: I'm so glad i inspired you!! woo hoo, go me.. oh wait it's you with the idea.. go you!!!
I agree that we need to get organized. I think all of us are excited or intrigued about doing this and we need to get it going before that fizzles out. ha ha. So, someone organize this and pass out demands. ha ha. Khaki.. you started this, you know!

04-11-2003, 11:14 AM
looks like you guys have been busy (10 posts since my last one. wow)
a)
Havik's rwp.gif image is great!
We'll have to change the text (unless someone wants to get generous and puchase runningwithpaste.com - it is available!)
Otherwise. I really like that image and think that we should figure-out how to incorporate it onto the pages(s) or at least the home page.
Havik... you didn't happen to do that in Fireworks did you? (if so... could you please send me the raw PNG file?)
b)
Chopper has both scared and confused me with his LEFT and RIGHT links. That's good though... I love danger!
c)
Jona has probably got the whole site completed and is writing-up an invoice for it right now  .
Ok Jona... how much?
And as far as super-DHTML... umm... I'm not proficient in it... but I don't mind having a project where I get to play around in it.
Also... looking forward to seeing your skills with the javascript intro (will that cost extra?
d)
jdavia has his priorities in order and is keeping his little girl happy... (that makes me happy too).
So... AZ, huh? I love AZ! But... now... I'm afraid that I will have to refer to you as a Zonie from this point forward! ;) (sorry... but as a former San Diego resident... it's my duty to do so)
But to address the questions:
Name of the site?
Are we agreed upon "Running with Paste"?
Where will it be?
That's a really good question. Temporarily it can go here:
www.1dot0.com/runningwithpaste/
(my brother's site... but he'll spare another folder for his little sis..... although....... sshhhhhhhh... i just overwrote his original index page with the one containing the graphic. But as long as I can try to find the backup for it... I may live to see another day)
Webmaster?
I'll upload to the "temporary"(?) location... but I'm mostly hoping to just be silly and contribute whatever is needed. I don't need or want to be in charge.
Anyone willing?
Karaoke?
I have no idea. I personally cannot sing and therefore I don't (except with the top down while speeding down the parkway!)
e)
Lora is very correct. We must not allow ourselves to fizzle (plus... I can assure you that she is every bit as peculiar as me... which i think is good... so we can't lose that asset!)
If we can at least get a home page, and a layout for content... then we can individually work on and submit some pages and ideas. Right? Because... I'm afraid that I'm gonna lose steam on the original concept if we don't progress any further.
f)
Hey xx... I know someone who needs some graphics work done (and I think that you seem to fit the style that he is looking for). I have referred him to the link for this thread (for a sample), but do you have an online portfolio or anything?
Maybe $ome money in it for you... (???)
okay... aside from this really ridiculously long post... I gotta go into the office for a few hours.
I'll log-in from there to see if anything is new.
Later all...

Well, like I said, I have some amazing ideas and stuff that I think would be cool to do on this site. I dreamed up somethign yesterday, and although I haven't yet started--I can assure, it will look really nice. No one here would mind if I put music with the intro--maybe like rock? I mean, not with words (except for "Running, with paste or scissors."), but with a bunch of other stuff. I think it'll look great, but it will probably only work in IE6... I know it won't in IE5 (because only 6 has the plugins that I want :p, but I can try to make it run in 5. And I can try to make it run in--Netscape... Ooooh, but that will be a bigger challenge! :o). Anyways, if y'all approve of it, I'll go ahead and start making the intro.... Orange, blue, and white colors... I know! Black & white at the beginning (grayscale), and then after the first part of the intro is done, the colors fade on slowly to all of the objects (mostly moving text, but there will be a background on it, and it will fade on in a very nice gradient-wipe), and I can even make the text roll around as if water going down a sink and stuff like that... Here's a general idea of what I may want to do in Javascript (some text-effect ideas, anyways): http://geocities.com/god_loves_07/dynamicObj.html (just click the image and watch the Flash movie; the server doesn't support hotlinks :().

I just thought I'd say somethin' really quick... It's odd how it takes us webmasters so long to get ready to make the site... But then, we always have the site built in less than a few hours! I think it's just the clients who slow us down! LOL. :p I'm just kidding... And bored, but anyways... Maybe it's just me... Y'all tell me when... Sorry khaki, I didn't use fireworks. I used photoshop 6 and I have the psd file if you wish.
I was thinking about using an image that size and though that the file size would be too big. A 800x600 image would be 27k and a 1024x768 image would be 40k (according to photoshop). Not too bad or no?
It's almost done and will probably be done within 10 minutes of this post.

havik.. that is awesome!! i really like it and the colors are perfect!
i'm not speaking for the entire group, but the tread was deisgned for anyone that wants to help out. most of us have other pressing projects, etc and this is sort of a side line thing. i think the more ideas we get, the better the site will be. and it will be such a fun experiance (or a headache eventually. ha ha)
Jona: why don't you go ahead and put something together and let us see it. personally, i don't like long intro pages, so maybe add a link to 'skip the intro'?? just an idea.
However, do we want to keep this cross browser compatible? Just a question we need to address.
Adam: even if we could find a host that just ran the banner ads and no popups... i just registered a business site with netfirms... free sites have banner ads placed at the top but they aren't obtrusive, so it's cool. plus they will give you a free subdomain name.. so it's yourbusinessname.netfirms.com... so if we could find something like that for this... i know that's what you're saying... (i'm a Khaki in training, ok?!.. just teasing Khaki, you know i love you!)
speaking of which, where is she?!

So that we all can begin to accomplish the site, let's get started. Everyone make their own page with a link back to the main page.
www.1dot0.com/runningwithpaste/
Who ever does the main page should include a menu that will link to the page's we make.
So start laying out your page, and even if it is not complete, zip it and all its files and post an attachment here. this way we all can see the direction we are heading.

Hi there, I see that you all want to set up a random site, I thought I might help out if it's OK, by providing you with someinspiration. Me and a couple of others at school have set up some very bad sites, and some worse ones.
for instance, there's derbni (www.geocities.com/derbni) which is mine and was completed within 5 mins, and there's locker central (www.geocities.com/lockercentral) which took considerably longer, the guy on the left on the first picture of the first page is called phil and he and a couple of others set up another site called weeamwe (www.geocities.com/weeamwe).
Don't be fooled by the fact that he has set upi these 2 sites though, just take a look at his main site www.exsanity.freeola.com/ very tricky stuff.
Ah weel, enjoy.

Yes, I am using MS filters for it. Temporarily, anyways. I'll try using JavaScript to make it Netscape compatible, but this is for the time being. :) Here's an updated version, and I'll add a music loop to the background once I find a good one.

Well, since anybody and everybody gets to play, I took havik’s logo and ran it through Flash, and here’s what came out the other side. It’s a little on the large side, but might be fun…

I love the animation, Jona, but we do need to make it cross-browser. How about retaining your transitions for IE, and in other browsers creating a similar effect using multiple pages?
I was digging around on an old machine and found this game I wrote:
http://www.agbs.co.uk/dev/shooter/shooter.html
The graphics are terrible, but they could be improved. How cross-browser compatible is this (only tested in IE)?

You're Adam. I'm working on it; and I think I may get myself an extra wire so I can be online without my network host. :p Ssh! :) Anyways, I'll work on it; but for cross-browser, couldn't I just use DHTML (and lots of it)? I mean, you mentioned multiple pages. What is meant by that? Thank for the suggestions.
AdamGundry
04-12-2003, 10:42 AM
I was thinking you could get a similar effect (without the MS transitions) using an Iframe and multiple pages, one for each of the lines, like a slideshow script. You might be able to make it cross-browser without this, though, using layers or something.
Adam
Jona
04-12-2003, 10:44 AM
Oh, yah, I never even thought of that! That's good idea. I'll try that (first). And eventually get a script that uses layers and is cross-browser (IE4+ and NN5+ I don't know about NN4).

Adam, I Tryed your game and killed 22 hedgehogs in 32 shots b4 it was game over.:D
IxxI, your images look awesome, but i find it hard to picture them in a website. If the outer edges of your images where to blend into a single colour to match a webpage background, it would create a smooth seemless page.:)
And havik, I like the homepage you created, very crisp and straight forward.
I have nothing to add at this point in time as I have just bought myself a new ThermalTake Xaser III case, and after this post i will be moving my pc parts into there new home.

Hey everyone
I had nothing to do this weekend so I made a DHTML game for Running With Paste. You can find it here:
http://www.agbs.co.uk/dev/run
Comments/criticisms/etc. welcome. If you have problems running it, let me know your browser, OS, etc, and I'll try and improve it. As yet I've only tested it in IE 5.5 and 6.
Happy gaming! :D

It probably depends on processor speed - the machines I tested it on were not particularly fast (600-800Mhz). Anyone know how I could make the code run at the same speed on different machines? I'll try making a slowed down version for those with faster processors.
Great work, everyone.

What do you use to edit/create your images?
Do you create those backgrounds within the editor, or bring in an external image and alter to suit?
I guess, with all these images you have created, your wanting for a critics review. So I am going to do that. If I say something that may offend you, I did not mean to do so. Your work has been awesome, and would make great wallpapers from a desktop. But, The question I ask myself is where would you use these images in a web page? I believe you need to have a direction of where to go with them. An Aim or purpose.
Here are some Ideas.
1. From Feedback in this thread, the colours it looks like we are using are Orange, Blue and White. Use these colours in your images.
2. Make an image specifically part of a webpage;
example a) Background image. This image would need to be able to tile, and be mellow to not stand out above the webpage text.
example b) Title image. This would be the boldest part of the page but limited in space. Make it wider than it is tall. Have the background of the title either blend to the background, Transparent or have a border.
Remeber, this is only a critics review, and I look forward to seeing some images, that incorperate the above mentioned.
If anyone would like to add to this or have a go at me, feel free to do so :(
P.S. Adam, I have an AMD 1.4ghz

Chopper WeeD, I thought it was supposed to be a fun thing for this site and anything goes. So I designed my page around that idea. In other words we know better not to do certain things, but we do them for fun.
I did de-pixelate my copy of your image some and reposted it. That was fun and it is now on the page posted.
Some of IxxI's images can make a good logo if made much smaller. That makes them more useful than wallpaper, if you widen your view of them.

All my images were built from scratch using Photoshop 7. No images were used from anywhere else (bar the ones in which I incorporated the orange sign logo). And I don't mind the constructive criticism, though I thank jdavia for posting that I did it for fun rather than use. Saying that it shouldn't be too difficult to modify the images having created them...

So, wherever the site is going to go, someone could switch this over if they like.
Things have cooled off over the weekend. Everyone having a good monday so far? Mine is ok but the weather is getting me down. We had 25 degrees celcius here yesterday and today it's nearly freezing, cloudy and supposed to rain. That's Winnipeg weather for you though.

khaki
04-14-2003, 01:58 PM
hi peeps!
i've been gone for a while and the whole thread has exploded!
(there is an entire page without 1 khaki post... page 2)
xx... i think that you have created enough graphics to justify the creation of a portfolio ;)
If you don't have a site... you should just use one of the free ones that are available. After all... why not?
(although... it never occurred to me to use WebDeveloper.com as a free host for a portfolio. lol)
As for the INTRO... I can't view it. IE5.0 throws errors (it can't handle xObj.filters) and Netscape7.0 and Opera6.02 don't show anything at all.
My personal opinion about INTROs: they need to be SO COOL that I would never want to skip it... otherwise I always just skip it.
Plus... if it's not a necessary element... then it's more for the developer than it is for the visitor.
And of course... if I can't even SEE it... well... y'know... :(
(that's just my opinion  )
Ummm... Havik's page (runningwithpaste.html) produces some very different views from my end.
You can see that here:
http://www.1dot0.com/runningwithpaste/views.gif
Plus... it uses TABLES
Note: it looks pretty good in Opera(6.02).
I know that I've been a non-contributor lately... but really... we need to be careful not to throw every trick in the book at this... and we need to be somewhat browser compatable (v 5/6 and up is usually my aim). And I don't think that we want to turn this into everything that we would typically advise everyone else to aviod doing on their own pages.
But I do have an idea that might move things along:
We can all take the same original image: rpw.gif (it's in this thread somewhere... or get it from here:
http://www.1dot0.com/runningwithpaste/rwp.gif)
Then... create your own page incorporating that image... which means including additional content of some kind (personal choice) .
You can then post the page here, or email it to me... and I will upload them all onto http://www.1dot0.com/runningwithpaste/ (until or unless we can find a host where everyone can upload to).
We will need to create some universal navigational link that we can each embed into each of our pages though (and it should be consistently placed on every page. Possibly to the left of the sign and above the text?).
Anyway... that's one idea. And it will be interesting for everyone to see what creative and interesting things everyone does with thier own pages.
Anyone interested in something like that? (it's probably the only way that anything at all will actually get done. Because quite frankly... there are TOO many of us to get ANYTHING done! lol)
It would really be great to have a host that we could all download to independently (like a Geocities where we would all have the password... except not Geocities and their stupid ads!)
Feedback?
;) k

I've set up a free account for us to upload files to, at www.70megs.com. No ads, 70mb space, max file size 400kb.
It's not perfect, but should be ok for inital design and testing.
The site can be found at:
http://www.70megs.com/runningwithpaste/intro.html
I have also set up a .TK domain name for the site (URL cloaked):
http://www.runningwithpaste.tk
If you want login details to the host (sadly no FTP, but a file manager) please PM me on this forum, or email me at:
adamgundry at programmer dot net. I would post the login details here, but I am concerned about others reading this thread and using the site maliciously.
Adam
P.S. I've already uploaded Havik's design above, along with Jona's intro.
P.P.S. Does anyone mind if I modify the image for my page so the text bar is along the top, with the logo on the right (or left, I haven't decided yet)?
The positioning of the sign in relation to the orange line below it should no longer be an issue. I'm not sure on the positioning in NS7 because I don't have that. It works nicely on NS6 and IE6 thus far.
Adam:
I'd like to get that password, I'll PM you first though. Also, we should make someone in charge of uploading finalized content. To avoid the error of two uploads of the same file at once.
Also, before anything else happens, we should wait for the others to get a chance to check this thread. I know Lora, IxxI, jona, jdavia, chopper weed, web eagle, the two I posted to (khaki and adam), and I'm sorry if I forgot anyone else (there must be more). :(

i agree with khaki, this site should be designed with all of the stuff we preach in mind. it should be cross browser, accessibility is a must and i feel css is the way to go, since it is the future (at least right now it is. haha).

Problems ... The text in the page is a way out of the screen to the right on NS4.7. In IE it shows OK. I had NS7.2 installed but wasn't happy with it and got rid of it. I might have to load it back.

I've been offline for three days, and this post has boomed! Okay, first, I'd like to say that if anyone has Netscape6+ or IE5 or earlier to test this attachement. This script is 100% Javascript without any Microsoft plugins like my original intro. I think that we should use a browser check to run my original intro if the user's browser is IE5.5+ (those are the only supported browsers); and if they're using anything else, run the script in my attachment. It's not done yet, and I need some ideas. I've thought of making fade-off effects (not hard), scroll from top effect, wave-effect (into different words), and a few others I've thought of. Anyways, tell me what y'all think of it... It's only a small test... (P.S. You have to save it as a .html file, or you can go to http://geocities.com/god_loves_07/dynamicusrpage.htm and paste it in the textarea and click the open_IT button to view.)

OMG!!! I guess i didn't go 'back' into the previous posts yesterday.
the game cracks me up!! we have to figure out a way to use it.
all the graphics are great. i especially like the one with the animation where the guy is twirling on the sign... i literally LOLd here, people are beginning to wonder if i'm on drugs! ha ha.
i also like rwp3.gif because of the incorporated 'made up' stat.
i totally feel inferior here, you guys are awesome!!!
i'm going to try to come up with some stats for the page.
do we know what we ultimately want the site to be? do we just want pages of stats and graphics? i think we need to incorporate the game (because it's hilarious!!).

04-15-2003, 11:48 AM
Chopper WeeD, your error is because you couldn't download the plugin from Microsoft's Web site. Which is where the progId's come from. So you might want to just download the .txt file and save it as .html, then try it. Sometimes my Geocities server produces unexpected errors. (E.g., all of that mumbo-jumbo advertising code that is automatically generated by the server.)

Ixxi, I've PM'd you the login details to access the website file manager. If anyone else needs them, contact me.
I've created a directory for everyone who is on the menu, so put your content in there. If you aren't on list and want to create something, just PM me.
The theme is "a communal and irrelevant and non-serious website devoted to not being relevant or serious" (quote from Khaki). Create whatever you think that would fit - illogical statistics (the original concept), games, links to interesting websites, etc.

I uploaded a"running2.zip" into the menu html .
This added links to 70megs, just the members portion need to be added to it. This way when clicked they will take you somewhere.
Also it should fit the screen better, since the runningwithpaste image is smaller. Doing that I had to redraw it to clear it up.
I will add text to the images for anyone that doesn't have the time. Just let me know what you want said. If you say too much the text will be smaller. Sorry I haven't found a way to put animations in the message as yet.

That's my specialty (the ASP/DB part... not the "chat" part... although... )
I'm just curious ( I can always run a secondary link to my bro's site for any ASP stuff anyway).
Glad to see everyone being so productive.
Just one thing though:

Actually, Khaki, I wasn't quoting you. I said, "PHP.net:" as in, PHP.net has that quote on their site. :p Sorry if I was misunderstood. It doesn't even sound like you! ;)
Well, that cross-browser intro that I'm making will have to wait a little longer. First I think I should finish making my part of the site (anyone see it?), then I'll work on the intro.
I agree with you, Khaki. We need to all pitch in and purchase a domain (runningwithpaste.com). And we have to make sure we have access to all of the major languages like: PHP, ASP, CGI/Perl, and DBs like MySQL and stuff.
Question: Will we have a forum/message board? Or will we use a Java chat room? Or will we each have our own sites with our own forums/chat rooms?

coupla things:
yeah... that quote didn't quite sound like me (there weren't even any "..." LOL ;) ).
Chip-in?
hmmm.... ef ASP!
(lol)
No... I'm not saying we "chip-in" for anything  .
Free is good for me :) .
Chat? Not necessary (just trying to save this forum from some of our ongoing blathering  ).
I did see the first part of your site Jona. Ummm... the submit does not work in Netscape 7.0
Plus... do you really need a drop-down box for the links anyway? You already have a menu that does the same thing.
Even so... I'd kill the "GO" button and submit the selection options "on-click" instead of a seperate GO button (in my opinion ;) ).
Download Netscape sweetie. Your too bright to become a one-dimentional developer ;) .
Haven't really looked at much else yet (still playing "catch-up").
Sleep-time now (almost)... so hopefully I'll have more time for this tomorrow.
sweet dreams, all...

Submit button? Where?
khaki
04-16-2003, 10:44 PM
Technically not a "submit" ... but your "GO" button (the one that calls your function)
It doesn't work (N7.0).
(so kill it off anyway. Call your function "onclick" or "onchange" or whatever  )
Did you test it in Netscape? (or just busting my chops instead  ).
(are you the same guy who said, "Feedback por favor"?)

Khaki, yes that's me. :) But I just didn't understand what you meant by "submit" button. Anyways, yah, I'll take that off. I put it on there because the second page I went to at http://elmers.com/ had that on there. So I just decided to make it go along... If my computer had the room, I'd download Netscape.... I can't test my site(s) on Netscape because I don't have the browser on this computer and I don't have enough room to download it. I have NN6 on my other computer, and NN4 on another one.. And IE5 on the one with NN4.. But I'm low on space on this laptop.. I'll probably buy a new laptop come Christmas (hopefully my dad will help me out on purchasing it).
I'll have Photoshop in a few days, so I'll be able to do a lot more with pictures and stuff. Currently I'm using Windows Paintbrush and PhotoSuite 8.1 (which is okay, but terrible in comparison with Paint Shop Pro, which isn't comparible to Photoshop!). Anyways, we do need a new server because 70 megs is down again!

Isn't www.mydomain.com a free management service for domains? You need to acquire hosting and purchase a domain name seperately.
I tried www.freewebspace.com, check out the first two pages here:
http://www.runningwithpaste.o-f.com/intro.html
The banner ad is pretty bad, and it's added server-side so we have little control over it. Still, we could use it, I suppose.
I don't know about www.free-web-space.org, has anyone tried them?
If we really have no other option, I could host the pages on my site, but then I couldn't give anyone else FTP access and it would be a little more complicated.
Alternatively, we could try www.spaceports.com - I've used them before, and you get FTP, PHP and MySql, but they've just started putting all these popups on sites. Try this site (http://www.futureimperfect.tk) for an example site hosted with them.
Adam
UPDATE: I'm trying to get us hosting at SCSUK (http://www.scsuk.net/theoffer.html) but it could take a while. I've already applied, so don't hassle them.

Finally, I think we're sorted. I've got hosting at http://www.brinkster.com/ which has no ads, ASP & database, web based file manager, etc.
The site is currently up at http://www26.brinkster.com/rwpaste.
I will be PMing login details to everyone who asked for them before shortly...if you don't get details in an hour or so, contact me.
Hopefully this host will be suitable.

Everything works real cool. So is the site so far.
Adam I like how you changed the menu. In particular the delay when you move your mouse from the menu.
It still has the horizontal scroll bar. It might be the image size, or the fact that a scroll bar now shows. Could a 95% width help. I'm sure it will get solved
AdamGundry

In particular the delay when you move your mouse from the menu.
 I didn't add a delay, all I did was remove some redundant code and set up a few of the links.
Can whoever created the banner image (I'm afraid I've forgotten) edit it so it is smaller than 800 pixels wide, so we can fit it in a 800*600 screen?
Adam
jdavia
04-17-2003, 06:12 AM
Because the scroll bar covers a part of the tables and the image. I had to make the tables "width=750" the image "width=750" and change the script 812px to
Somehow 812px wasn't the only problem though it would seem so.
With no scroll, 790px or 98% works good.

hey adam,
That banner I created is 800 pixels wide, but because of the margins and the border it won't show up perfectly.
I've attached an image 750 pixels wide that'll do the trick. Also, I'll be logging in later today to get some stuff up. I remember I posted some things on my work server here, well since it's up on this new site I'll remove them now.

Thanks Havik, I've taken your banner and integrated it into the home page. I've also been on a bit of a frenzy, having done the following:
1. Changed www.runningwithpaste.tk to point to our new host.
2. Fixed the appearance of the home page at different resolutions (I hope...tell me if otherwise).
3. Edited the home page code to make it compliant with HTML 4.01 Strict.
4. Added a version of the navigation menu for users without javascript.

I am getting a double set of menu bars for everyone in IE5.5. The welcome information window stays on even when you mouse over another menu.
Also I think you askd me to make my page name (index), well it needs to be changed in your working copy from
<A href="dav/jdavia.html" to
<A href="jdavia/index.html" or
<A href="/jdavia/"
The width is solved now.
Another thing I notice is a space at the top and left side, possible the bottom of the page about half the width of the scroll bar. This is a factor too, in having to make the width less than 100%
Here is a snap

Okay, thanks to Adam, we now have a host that shows the pages (70megs didn't stay up but 10% of the time). So, I've got my main page and my "disclaimer" page done... Now, I'd like to know if anyone has any copyright-free pictures of people (especially people's faces) that I can distort for my "phunny photos" section. Just wondering. I've looked all over the Net, and they all say, "copyright [company name]."

I think it could be to do with the extra copy of the buttons in <noscript> tags, to support people with JS turned off. You say it only occurs in an editor - presumably the editor is not reading the <noscript> tags properly? As long as it's ok online, I suppose this is acceptable.
I don't get it myself, because Notepad is my editor :) .

It doesn't happen anymore. But I wasn't seeing double, if you know what I mean, and I had enough sleep.
I experimented with the space to the left and top of Running with paste page. I added this code may not be legal ?? but it did the job .
<body onload="goforit()"topmargin=0 leftmargin=0>
AdamGundry

The compliant version of that code is style="margin: 0px", and I've put that on the page. That's sorted out the left, top and bottom margins but there is a small gap on the right (800*600) we still need to deal with.

I tried that. When I make any other adjustments like this: by (making both tables and the rwpbanner jpg back to 100% in the code only). It gets too wide. But this fixes it.
Well it looks like I have worked while everyone else was on a Easter vacation. But I will be on vacation while you work, since I am retired. Hey, I had time to party too.
Anyway, I did another page hopefully for all to use to make notes, and other stuff to eachother on this site rether than at the forum. All the files and page are uploaded.
Adam don't get upset, but I had to learn that File Manager. I clicked on my Dir. and uploaded the files. They went into the main Dir. Actually you only need to delete the experiments.html file. The others like (TRadam) 10 total are now transparent. There is a ReadFirst file in the Zip for you.
AdamGundry
04-21-2003, 06:10 AM
Thanks for the update, jdavia. I know the file manager isn't brilliant, but it's hard enough to get decent free hosting without wanting FTP access as well. You need to double click on your directory, which will show its contents, then upload the files.
I've uploaded your files to the menu directory and removed them from the root.

I am working on new message windows for the main page. The present ones are images, and are limited. The new ones are in text, easier to edit and can support links and animations. Most of all you will be able to size your window to the amount of data you want in it. This way the main page can have more value to it for each person. The new windows are layered, this means other information can be on the page and the window will open over it. I have it mostly worked out, but Adam will have to iron out some kinks. (Yeah Adam!))
Maybe these windows will be available through a link to a sub-directory, so as not to interfere with the root directory of the site. I also have a page for us to use as for experiments. As with the main page, it has separate sections for everyone.
Here is a zip of the new menu and windows. there are two more links in the menu, one for the experiment page, and one blank.
I EDITED the zip. THis is up-dated

ok guys, i am so so so so sorry. jdavia, please don't beat me!!
i think chopper and i are making you wait in anticipation for the unveiling of pages that will mesmerize you. ok, hopefully CW is because i'm clueless right now as to what i should do...
i do apologize though.:( i've been really busy with work and school (yes, i work full time and attend school at night) and i have new kittens!! (i raise siamese cats). anyway, all the excuses in the world are not enough to make up for slacking... so... i'll get my butt in gear and i'll try to get SOMETHING out there just to make my presence known. :(
now, all i need is an idea.... hmmmm...

OK< first and foremost.. sorry for posting again so soon.. BUT i had a brain storm that actually produced something.. so this is the idea, but i want your approval before designing my pages because it will sort of center around this...
I just purchsed my Dell Axim (which I've wanted for like a month.. it was a long time for me.. ok..) and i'm going to get it set up to do the GPS thing... anyway... there is a site www.geocaching that is for people with GPSs to go and find these geocaches (treasure hunting with GPS basically). you take something from the cache (box, tupperware container) and leave something in the cache... so i'm going to start doing this... anyway... i was thinking to promote our site, i could just buy the little bottles of glue and slap our web address on there. then each geocache i visit we have a chance of spreading our site name. haven't totally researched it to make sure it's ok, but i know that monkeycaching got started in canada (people leave monkeys from barrel of monkeys and the track them), so i think it would be fine...
anyway, what do you think?? and if it's ok, then i'll design my pages around the geocaching and 'running with paste to geocache sites' theme...
let me know.

LO ! ! !
THAT IS SO COOL ! ! !
(why am I yelling?)
I think that would be fun!
But I also agree with xx ("the untold story") that we should have something on the site in addition to that (even though geotracking is pretty popular and could carry the site on it's own probably).
but anyway... we all need to do something (like freakin Lora who is gone forever and then drops a major idea on us in like 10 seconds!!!).
so...
I vote that we get something going AND do the little glue bottles with the web address on it AND we force xx to reveal the mystery behind the name.
;)  :)
in the meantime i'm redesigning my site for upload to the Brinkster... and i'll try to come-up with something cool like LO (maybe a variation of 1000 Journals? I'll put a link to that on my website... by 2pm... hopefully  ).

plus, that way you guys can GET OFF MY BACK!! hee hee. just teasin'.

NOW I see where you probably got the idea that i wanted the site to revolve around this... what i meant was that my idea for my portion of the site is going to be focused around the geocaching.. not the entire site. it was not my intention to 'take over' the site... sorry guys!! i was just happy and hyper and typing away because i finally had an idea of what to do... it sounded good in my head...

IxxI, Could your story be something like this:
Mom wanted you named, say Rudolph, after Valentino. But Dad beat her to the punch and named you Joseph, after him.
Mom never found the birth certificate, and called you Rudy. She sent you to school under that name, it was what she told the census people it was.
You grew up to an adult with that name until you absolutely needed your birth certificate. Only to find out your real name was Joseph.
Now all your old friends call you Rudy, and the later ones call you Joseph. They don't go together as nick names.
Is that why you can't explain?
I just did, because that was me. OK, now you it can't be that bad.
Adam:
Sorry for so many zips. I was trying to save you some work in one way, but maybe created it in another. The last zip is the one that counts. I plan to send bits of code on the experiments page when a link is set up on the menu to it. If you noticed there is one for experiments and a blank one on the last zip.
Lora:
That sounds good, How about getting it done so we can all see how it goes.
For all:
Feel free to change anything I come up with. I had to have something to get an idea started. You guys are the pro's not me. I feel good having an idea that could start something, even if it isn't used in the end. I always have the finished product in mind. It was my job at one time, but you can't teach an old dog new tricks, you can try though.

Ummm, no not really. But it would be a good story. I'm kinda interested on how half of you call me xx and half IxxI, I was a bit confused to start off with but I can cope with both (if I really try hard). The thing is you could ask the same of anyone, why is Khaki khaki? Why is Webeagle webeagle? Why is Chopper WeeD, you get the picture (notice I wasn't quite so stupid as to ask about AdamGundry...). I'm just wondering why my choice of nickname has sparked so much interest. I don't mind (actually I'm flattered - most attention I've ever had ;) )!
And Lora, read up on it - seems a very good idea. If only our website were as good as the promotion's going to be we'd be OK!!
Oh and I'm not a professional either jdavia, so we'll be alright!

EDIT: Lora that was read pronounced as the colour not as the grass - looked at it and thought it might sound rude if I didn't clarify it.

IxxI: ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! actually i did read (like the grass) that and think read (like the grass).. but i thought.. yeah, i need to because I don't exactly know everything I need to know in order to pull this off. ha ha ha....
now for your edit... i read (like the colour) it 4 times before figuring it out.... Blonde moment... ha ha.
and as far as your name... I'M SORRY!! I just glanced and thought the I's were []s... oops!! made a note, will correct... it has always bothered me when people pronounce or spell my name wrong (cursed with a name that most spell Laura), so it matters to me to get those things right.:D

Y'all peeps flew by me this mornin'.... But that's okay..... Hey, did I ever tell anyone about the story of the Purple Ping-Pong Balls? I'm going to have to put that on my site.... Y'all just yell at me if ya wanna hear it now!! :D
lora_3677
04-23-2003, 01:07 PM
Jona: NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was my favorite joke to tell people for a long time. So what is the longest time frame you have been able to drag it out?? I always tried to add embelishments to it and drug it out for my best friend for about 25 minutes on a road trip... LOL!!! I thought she was going to beat me to death! Always looked for new victims too.. heehee.
I checked out your site, Jona. Looks great!! Wanna do mine? ha ha. I'm working on it...

Hey, Lora, if you really meant that.... $600 a minute, ok? LOL, just kidding. :p But anyways, you know the story of the Purple Ping-Pong Balls? Really? I'm gonna put that on my site... Have you ever heard of the story of Whabola?

04-23-2003, 01:11 PM
xx...
your a good dancer
(around the question surrounding your name, that is. lol)
as far as "khaki" is concerned:
#1 - it's NEVER capitalized.
#2 - it's my real middle name... and it is the name by which i have been known since i was a child.
#3 - the origin of "khaki" as a middle name is simple...
my daddy was US Marine Corps lifer (30yrs).
"khaki" is a military color which is also a reference to a type of uniform (and it beats the crap out of being named "battleship-grey". lol)
#4 - my real first name is not known to people who have known me for YEARS... so don't expect to learn what it is here.
i am khaki... as silly as it might sound
it would be interesting to hear how some of these other names came about. so if anyone would like to share...
as far as why i call IxxI just "xx"...
it is because I am very strange ( )and I tend to tag people with my own names that I call them.
IxxI is xx to me ;)
i just like it... so xx it is
(you don't mind... right?)
and... in regards to the site:
i think that it should be whatever everybody wants it to be.
i trust that there are those of you who have assumed roles that interest you and have served a valuable purpose (thank you thank you thank you!!!)
right now... i am just playing around with my own page (uploaded and semi-updated today!!!).
and as much as i feel that we should all maintain an idividual identity and style... we may also need to find some cohesion along the way.
right now... i see us as being like the US (of A). lots of states flying under 1 flag.... except our flag is RWP (which gives me an idea for a "jersey-theme" for my pages. hmmm).
anyway... i say that we should all just create the type of pages that express what we may not be able to express in a work (or whatever) setting.
i don't know...
but i do know that this is a long post...
so...
;) k
edit: so... how long was my post? long enough that 5 posts occurred while i wrote it. yikes!
Jona

Really, khaki? (Hey, I didn't capitalize it. :D) Cool. My name is actually Jonathan, and I can type it just as fast as Jona or Nathanoj (another name, I commonly use). I just.. Well... You're interested so, my mom always calls me "Jona" for short. I'm also well-known as, "Joner. B. Fenaka," which is nowhere near my real name, but my mom always called me, "Joner," too! By the way, please don't ask what the "B" stands for... It... doesn't sound too nice... Anyways, Fenaka is a mis-con-screwed version of my real name (which is Italian, and about twice that long). My dad was at a club once (he used to be something of a "rock-star") and was introduced as, "Eloy Fenaka," which is totally wrong! :p
So there you have it.... Hey, I think I should put that on my "About" page, eh? ....*Listens to the odd silence--and crickets* ..... Maybe not......
khaki
04-23-2003, 01:29 PM
well jona...
i usually just call you sweetie...
i pretty much always have... and i'll probably continue to do so (sorry... but once i tag you... it's usually too late to do anything about it. and besides... your probably used to it by now anyway. lol)

khaki: I like my LO nickname... i've never really had a nickname... my niece called me Ora for a long time because she couldn't pronouce L's... and my nephew called me Loa, he had problems with R's... but i like LO.. ha ha.
ok, i uploaded the main page of my part of the site... it's not fancy and it's NOT finished... i need to do some graphic mutilations (hee hee), but it gives you a base as to what i'm thinking...
Note: the links don't work right NOW, but they will SOON...
IxxI
04-23-2003, 01:43 PM
I apologise for the capitalisation - it will never happen again. And khaki is also better than navy-blue, or white, or camo or any other uniform colour (/style). And you can call me whatever you want (within reason!) I've been called many things before, most far worse than xx, so thats fine by me. And I still don't know what to put in my site, other than more graphics...
IxxI
PS I have 1.5 left feet - dancing isn't my strong point. I'd also like to say that IxxI has nothing whatsoever to do with my real name, which is a perfectly normal name.
IxxI
04-23-2003, 01:51 PM
Like the page Lora - I hate to point it out but its runningwithpaste.tk not .com - sorry to be pedantic. And you can call me xx if you like - I'm really not all that bothered. And anyway - one of the things I most enjoy doing is hiking. I went to the Alps last year and hiked for 2 weeks there. So computer geeks can get out (occasionally ;) ).

Is that a NY-area thing... nicknames (the kind that people usually hate)... or is that everywhere?
you can imagine the nicknames that i've been tagged with (so i won't even go there  )... but it seems like everyone around here (NY-area) is called by some kind of nickname.
i'm just curious if it's like that everywhere (i assume that it must be).

OK, i'm in over my head... my idea was to do something like www.monkeycache.com has done with their plastic monkeys.. however.. in order to track the bottles or whatever i'm going to need to be able to tie to a database and we can't do that, right?? unless i want to update the page daily or something... maybe i should scale it down and forget tracking the bottles and just promote the site thru them instead...to lead people to our site for enjoyment... lol.

your RWP pages...
use them for a portfolio of your images that you create!
(just an idea... since you said that you didn't have an online portfolio.... and then you went on a mad-run of whipping-out about 30 in a row! lol)
heck... i can't come up with my own content... and i'm telling other people what to do

hey LO...
the link is producing bupkis!
but... don't dispair...
maybe we can link to a db (brinkster supposedly supports ASP... and i'm getting ready to test that in a little while).
(they can't support ASP and then not support a db... can they  ).
you try to find a good link for the monkey business....
i'll test the ASP support at brinkster.
we'll meet back here.

oh...
cool link!
yeah...
if we can pop a db onto brinksters...
we should be able to do something like that.
too bad i don't have a GPS unit...
because now i'm craving one like crazy! lol
i'll try putting a db on there tomorrow and let you all know how it goes.
(hey... does anybody else watch The Amazing Race? this whole monkey/paste thing reminds me of that a little)
;) k

04-23-2003, 03:57 PM
ok, cool. i think i've made up for 'silent time' today. ha ha.
khaki: if you notice, they track each of their monkeys. it would be cool to do that with our paste bottles... if everyone wants to do that...
question for all: (don't feel obligated, since i got myself into this) Does anyone else want to participate in spreading paste bottles in geocaches... otherwise mid missouri is going to get sticky from paste geocaches really quick...ha ha. when (if i ever get to again) i go on vacation and trips i plan on finding geocaches to put it in too. BUT, if we could come up with a label (actually i was thinking about using the homepage graphic with the road and the sign and the trees, hee hee) for the bottles that we could all use and then number them or something... (You can check out the monkey site.. it's basically the same concept).
later all!! have a good evening. leaving in 30 mins, so this may be the last post from me you have to read for today. ha ha.
lora_3677

I've added some to my page, I had more but it mysteriously vanished  I probably deleted it by accident or sumthing.
Anyways, I've only tested it with NS6 and IE6. I'm sure it doesn't work for NS4 but other than that, that's about it.
This monkey thing intrigues me (where's chopper weed when you need him! :D), maybe I should read up on it more.
Oops, meeting time. I'll post back when it's done.

it's like work... but FUN!
by the way... i checked your page.
iframes! (me too!)

Sorry khaki (for crazing you), I knew what you meant - twas a joke (the smilie was meant to convey that - obviously a bad choice in smilies). Problem is (other than the rwp stuff, obviously) I have nothing to shove in the portfolio, you've seen all (well most) of my photoshop work - in fact the first time I used it was to post the first rwp picture on page 1 (or 2 or something) but its an idea, thanks. k, meeting over and I'm back.
Happy easter to you to Jona, a little belated but that's ok.
Oh yeah, just in case anyone takes it out of context, the chopper weed reference was meant because of the picture chopper has. I wasn't saying chopper is an actual monkey, I don't know if chopper is :D. jk chopper.
wait, what is this? Oh, it's quitting time. See everyone tomorrow.

no prob xx...
you weren't really crazing me...
i was just playing :)
but... my point is...
a portfolio begins with a "concept".
and artists/painters/whatever go through "periods".
RWP is the current concept...
and the work you create now will be your "paste period".
gotta start somewhere
;)
so jona... i can't wait to hear/see your joke sweetie.
will it be on the site when i wake-up tomorrow (zero-dark-thirty in the east)?
i can't wait.
okay... i gotta scoot...

Man to catch up I had to read from page 9.
I've been just as busy as all of you, but it takes me a little longer.
I up-graded the Experiments and jdavia/index pages. One can be seen by clicking on my button, the other from a link in the message.
Adam;
There is information in the jdavia/index page for the #5 message. When it was done over the information got lost.
Should I add it to the message or should you. It is there for a copy/paste. Part goes in the head (it's labeled) and part goes in the message #5, (it's labeled)

Girls Rule!! ha ha.
thankx khaki! you are the bestest!! i tested it, seems to work fine... 2 things i see... does VB Script work in Netscape? and eventually we'll have to add some validation on the fields... i accidently entered an empty bottle... oops!
but i'm thinking this would be great to leave the form out there as an 'invisible' page, so we can easily enter new bottles... can we password protect that some way??? i'm asking for a lot from a free site. ha ha.
we also need to make sure we put a limit on the # of records it can return. brinkster is cautioning no more than 100 should be returned at one time because it will lock up browsers...
and... ok i had more than 2 things i guess... in order to build a page for 'tracking bottles' we'll need a unique identifier (Which we have as Bottle Name), so we can spool thru, find the one we want and add info on to it... now how is that going to work... almost like threads in a forum, because they'll have to be able to expand as they are found, retrieved, found, retrieved, found, eaten.. OH i mean retrieved.. ha ha.
so, we need to figure out exactly how involved we want the bottle idea to be...

do you (or any of you guys) know/use Access?
ASP? (and/or VBScript)
SQL?
just curious as to the level of talents that we have (and if you don't know any of that stuff now... you will be sure to learn from this... if you want to, that is)
... and just for the record:
VBScript works on ANY browser when it is part of an ASP page
(the server writes the page... not the browser  )
i should probably convert the test form/db for chat capability so that we can just post there (ummm... maybe in a little while. just try to deal with it in it's current state for the time-being  ).

I'm feeling rather inferior with all this talk of VBScript, ASP, PHP, etc... :D
To be honest, I don't know too much  , but I'm making an effort to learn all I can. I actually never had any web experience at all up until 4 months ago (I was more into programming in C, C++, Java, and assembler language). But I catch on quick.

That's neat Havik. As a matter of fact, I started learning May last year. And I also originally started learning to make games.. Well--in a way. I'd just re-program them... And at that time, all I knew was Hex like all-the-way... I'd just open ROM files and stuff (don't worry, I never supported Warez--I owned all of the games I downloaded and kept) in a hex editor.. Then I'd go through millions of codes.... And I understood it all.... I made over 100 codes in a week for my fav. game.... :p
Enough history, though... On to new things; new ideas! :D

Well, as we're comparing skills - I have none. I didn't start learning HTML and javascript til January this year, and before that I'd had no programming experience - so I'm a real newbie!

I need a new avatar... Oh, what? Really, IxxI? Cool! You must spend 26hrs. a day on Photoshop or something... :p I only spend 30--and I don't spend it on Photoshop (yet--and it's because I don't have it--yet!) I spend it on Javascript.. :p Like you didn't notice... ;)

Now I feel better knowing that I'm not the only one that started recently. I know that we don't stop learning due to new technologies and such so essentially we're all starting out at all times. :)

uh-oh
so the answer to my questions:
do you (or any of you guys) know/use Access?
ASP? (and/or VBScript)
SQL?
is:

khaki/khaki

well... unless some of the other guys can work with that stuff, i guess that you guys will be picking-up bad habits (and hack coding) from me then (since there doesn't seem to be anyone here with the necessary knowldege to keep me honest  ). lol
where's Lo?
she knows Access (right?)
(gosh... I hope so ;) )
hmmm...
that's cool though.
it's a group effort... so everybody will learn something out of this.
oh...
and who wrote "normal conversations seem..." in the DB? (i'm just curious)

I guess it's one of those "west of the Mississippi" things
sorry :( but maybe it's funnier if you actually hear it... than if you read it.
but here's my very favorite joke of all-time (and it doesn't go on and on and on and on and on...):

The bartender says, "Hey, why the long face?"

sorry guys... i had to do some work for work... i know i need to get my priorities straight!! what was i thinking..
ok, to answer khaki's questions...
access: can handle it
asp: enough to make me dangerous to ask questions
vbscript: got a book REAL close and i can normally get thru
sql: same as asp.
and i catch on real quick.. looked at your code and lightbulb went back on, just been a while since i used it...
now, did you build the db on brinkster OR did you upload it from access.. i tried uploading and it didn't take any of my tables... now i'm not TOTALLY stupid, i uploaded the db to the db folder and it had a size of 0... that should have worked, right??? what did i miss???
as far as my level of expertise... hmmm... i'd say i'm on the bottom rung of the ladder and slowly climbing up. i've had classes (even though that isn't real experience, khaki *wink*) on different program languages and web development topics, but this is actually the first 'real', 'full blown' thing i've done.. unless you count two personal web pages that i finally gave up on and included tables for layout.. Netscape was killing my CSS... so i'm using CSS for everything except layout... still sort of sounts.. lol.
ok, i'm jumping to our new 'chat' page. ha ha.

okay then...
so far... it looks like LO and I will be doing the back-end development for this.
(although everyone is welcome to take part)
i'lll try to make a workable/readable "shout-box" (formerly known as the test DB interface) sometime later or tonite (unless someone else wants to do that?????????? just the formatting part?????).
okay...
i'll be quiet for a little while now

oh... LO...
I created the DB locally and uploaded it as an MDB file to Brinkster (and apparently it MUST go in the dedicated DB folder).
I don't know why your file (tables... whatever) didn't upload.
Are you sure that you created them
We will need to try to figure-out all of the fields that will be necessary in the true DB.
And since we will be using Access in an internet environment... we may not want to do too many cross-database queries... so we should see if we can make just 1 lean and mean DB to handle everything.
Let me know what you think
(and does anyone have SQL Server available to them? Can we pop an SQL Server DB on Brinkster?)
okay...
blah...blah... over...

Adam
The three images are uploaded.
The train and whistle events work good in NS4x. The other event works good in IE5.5.
NS7.2 and IE6 shows it about the same but messed up a little.
I notice that I get a javascript error when I try to do anything in the program manager of brinkster.com. I have to use IE.
Maybe later today I will look at all the uploaded pages by everyone and pass along some comments. I promise not to be harsh, cause it might backfire. But I will be straight forward as to how I preceive them.
I'll just say one thing now. I read jona's endless story. I wondered where all those ping pong balls were stored, and what a stupid father he was. Where he was when the balls killed his son? How come he didn't get killed too? I quess if you told all that, I would still be reading. Oh well!

I know of a few *free* hosts that support MySQL... But they don't support ASP. :( Dunno if that will make a difference if you're using Brinkster for cross-DB queries... {Whatever that means.. LOL J/K}
khaki
04-24-2003, 01:05 PM
ummm...
actually... i don't think that any more information regarding the ping-pong story is really necessary  LOL
and Joe... my page is... ummm... just a few lines of text away from being a 404 at this point  LOL
I had planned on doing a re-design... but then I got a bit involved with Lo's DB thing (and in case it is not obvious enough by now... i'm a little more confortable on the back-end than the front-end  ).
I'll get around to it though (but it won't be tonite... it's SURVIVOR Thursday!!!)
(I was actually supposed to go see the Doors tonite... but it looks like the tickets fell-through as of last nite. ugh)
...Break on through to the other side...

OK, update on the geocache paste.. not sure if you all are interested, but... i have the db done for the geocache paste. i have MOST of the html pages done, i'll work on the asp and forms tomorrow.
once this is completed, we will be able to track our glue bottles and receive updates on who has them and where they are. which is pretty cool.
a special thanks to khaki for ALL her help. she is truly one awesome powergirl! haha.
khaki has made a demo 'chat' site on the site linked from her page, which is very cool. keeps all our stuff off here, at least.

There are so many posts and too many subjects to make comments, so instead I'll make suggestions.
We all should make some suggestions as I am as to the make-up of the main page. We should set a piority on completing the main page of the site. Linking all the to other members pages, everyone setting up their messages from the buttons. Suggest or present a background and/or something else on the main page, like why it was formed and its intentions or purposes. This finishes off the page.
There should be only one main page. All the other pages should flow from it and not compete with it. Unlike, (i'm a little more confortable on the back-end than the front-end). The front-end is more important, the main page. The back-end can come later, your pages.
 Does everyone agree? I see a lot of good stuff done so far and I am actually learning something along the way. Remember me with my thoughts on tables! I'm seeing how I can overcome using them most of the time now, and make you think I used them until you look at the code.
These are my suggestions, not aimed at any one except to the comment. Hi! What do you think?

i think that me and Lo (okay... mostly just me  ) have been uploading, downloading, and querying the p*ss out of the site today.
i just went in to the file manager and cleaned-out the db table that we power-collaborated on all day today. and then...
POOF! no more bandwidth
suffice to say that i was not aware of any limit (nor did i even consider it  )...
so...
:( sorry!

i am really sorry...
and now that i know... it won't happen again

i'm trying to fit-in with the color-scheme and everything.... that's why I took my page down this morning :( .
me and Lo spent a lot of time today (also known as: all day  ) working on back-end stuff.
i'll conform to whatever we all decide.
please don't make me feel like i'm running against the current :( .
i'm not.
as soon as we can get back on the site  i'll just use the background from the main page as my own (yikes... i don't undersatnd why i'm feeling so guilty... i didn't do anything on purpose. really).
plays well with others... (seriously!) ...

Well, I'm not mad at you (speaking to khaki)... We all (obviously) have computers.. I have my site on the local computer.... And online... So..... Yeah, I think you get it.... But ya can't do server-side stuff on the client-side. ;)
khaki
04-24-2003, 06:03 PM
yeah... i know that sweetie...
but Lo and I were doing server-side stuff on the server-side because we do not have the ability to do it together on the client-side.
that's all.
(did i just say that backwards? ugh. i don't even know now  )
neither of us thought that there was any strain on system resources...
it was just basic queries to the db...
no graphics...
no page-weight...
just uploads, downloads, and queries (although... a sh*tload of them  lol).
but... in all fairness...
we both work on intranets that can easily handle that kind of traffic.
this is a free site... and it's limitations were not yet realized (but they are now!)
and honestly... there was not 1 (not ONE) graphic that passed from the server between either of us.
just stripped-down ASP/SQL... that's it.
who knew!?
(not me  )
and i keep re-reading Joe's post...
and now i can't tell if he is mad at me or not
but really...?

It seems we have a bandwidth limit of 16.7Mb - Brinkster sent me an automated email informing me the limit was reached, and the site came back up at midnight.
This is unfortunate, because I thought we wouldn't have a problem with bandwidth at Brinkster. It's just next to impossible to find a viable free host. :(

I'M SORRY!!! I used/abused Brinkster most of the day and then I bailed before it went down... so I didn't even know it was gone... but i'm glad it's back. I should have realized the whole bandwidth thing, but I wasn't even thinking. Guess it mkaes a difference when several people are hitting it to update and when it's just me (like on a couple personal sites I update). I promise to not harrass Brinkster as much and hopefully it will be able to support us all.
I think the front end, back end discussion was confusing me and where i work i work with acronyms and techie terms all day, so i know it's easy to get confused.. ie when I say CD, i mean the music, but if i told my father inlaw i bought a CD, he would think Certificate of Deposit. ha ha. When i think front end, i think design, layout, graphics, the page you see. backend to me.. is the db's, the forms, the guts of web programming... the main page DOES need to be finished and havik you are doing grrreaaaat!!
I guess khaki and I are sort of in the same mindset, plus we were energetic (think the Dew did us in) and excited about getting this stuff to work. actually, this is the first FREE website host i know of that supports dbs.
Part of what I (and I wrangled her into it. hee hee.) would like to do is a couple forms for tracking the glue bottles.. i think it will be a fun little project and get our site name promoted in the process (free advertising ROCKS!!).. however... it's hard to build the front end(my definition) if you don't have a plan and the backend(my definition) to tie it to (it also helps if you draw out your forms so you don't have to reload the db 3 times.. most likely part of the problem with bandwidth as well...) anyway... plus, the front end stuff the i am thinking of doing for my part of the site can be whipped up fairly quick. today i'm doing 'frontend' stuff, so we should not have a problem. and like khaki, i didn't even think about all our queries causing an overload... but now that i say that, i think i remember staring out the window in class for a discussion on that...lol. (NO, i don't sleep or daydream during class! i play games like everyone else! ha ha)
Khaki: you're 404d, girl!! Where did you go??
And as far as my 'skills'... I think you are the one with skills, girlfriend!! It was alot fun working with you yesterday. i can see that i can learn ALOT from you... like form design (hint, hint). ha ha. and you are going to be my CSS resource. ha ha.
Everyone: Just a thought, but if you all think that my little project that sort of exploded all over the server yesterday is going to be a problem.. i could set up another site and we could connect to it thru the main menu and still use the running with paste pointer, right?? that would be simple to mesh two sites together... i've actually done that already with my personal website at angelfire and my ISP website space, and my Business website (i'm all over the web!! ha ha)... you don't even really notice that you are jumping from place to place. just a thought....
and i was going to update my part of the main page yesterday, but honestly i couldn't (ok, didn't take all that much time on it) figure out where i should be. plus the fact that i didn't want to mess up someone else's page, even though it's group property per say... but the fact that if they upload the page all the stuff i did will be undone, unless you download the page first and make changes and still you run the risk that in the meantime someone else makes changes and uploads before you're now outdated download is uploaded... that's alot of loads. ha ha.
i absolutely LOVE the main page!!!!!!!!!! however, havik, i love the orange weave for the background.. AWESOME!! i liked that one ALOT!!!
so, what do we want (as a group) to focus on completing today? i am going to try to get some asp done, but the group 'project' will get top priority.
this is a long post... SORRY!!!!!!!
convicted bandwidth abuser,
lo
edit: i reworded some stuff....

I'm working on the main page and you can view my progress at my page (it's my index.html file). Any comments, suggestions or criticism is welcome as it is our site. Also, let it be noted that here at work I only have IE6, NS6, and NS4 to test it on and I'm trying to get a design down first before I worry about fully complaint code (not the proper way to do stuff but it'd be nice to get something up for now).

main page suggestions and observations (only my opinion):
i like the menu, but can we possibly get the buttons to be in the same color range as our theme?
the runningwithpaste.com needs to be changed to .tk
I think i understand your concept with the Quotes and Sites boxes and those are good ideas.
Have to agree with jdavia, we need some sort of content to lure the visitors in to explore the other pages.
Final note, still totally in love the the graphic!!!!
Going to class, i'll be back at 11:25 central time.
edit:i realize you don't have the buttons on there yet and maybe that was part of the plan. i am observing your page, havik.
