I think the hibernate feature is great. So much so, I haven't restarted or shut down my computer for at least a week.

But there is a problem. Windows XP. When I press the turn off button, I get three options. Hibernate is not one of them. So I have to hit 'h'. The trick is, if I don't hit 'h' in about half a second, it doesn't do anything anymore (hmmm...).

Anyway, here goes the question. Can I configure the buttons which appear when I click turn off, so I have a hibernate button as well?

aha. great, thanks.

but I don't understand why this feature is obscured in this way. I bet your average user doesn't even know she can turn off the computer and not have to restart every application again when she turns it back on.

Probably not, but you can also press the power button to Hibernate your system.
Search for 'Hibernate' in Help and Support, select 'Manually put your computer into hibernation'
Don't do this if your's is the server: the other users don't appreciate it! :o

I used to use it for a while when I used Windows, but starting back up was too unreliable because it would often forget to wake the display back up. So I'd often end up having to just yank the plug to get display back again anyway.

Just do what I do, never shut your PC down. :D

Seriously though, if you use your PC every day, it actually takes more power to turn it off and on again, than it does to simply leave it on over-night. Just set it to go on standby after 20mins or something, then when you turn in for the night, just turn the monitor off and walk away.

My PC is fine, I do occasionally shut it down for one reason or another. Like this morning, I had to turn my PC off so that I could clean the dust of my graphics card heatsink, it got a little warm when I was playing NFSU2 and the PC shut down, when I checked the temp it was on 107 C.

My PC usually goes for about a month between shutdowns without too many problems, my CPU runs at 100% all the time and my internet connection is also normally maxxed out with various torrents. I'm pretty hard on my PC and it seems to take it all quite well.

Just do what I do, never shut your PC down. :DI can't do that, the cooler makes too much noise and it would disturb my sleep. The speakers also buzz, I have to unplug them too.

If the speakers buzz, try muting your microphone and line-in sockets from the volume controls.

They're not really speakers. It's an old but powerful CD player hooked up to the computer and reborn as speakers.

The Improvisor:)

Well it just shows how crap windows is doesnt it. Have a little search on servers and their uptimes. I had a look a few months ago and found some lynux servers had been running for 5 yrs without reboot.... yet couldnt find an iis anywhere near that. We have our 3 home computers continuously on 24/7 though, mostly cause we have advertisements open and we get paid to "look" at them, the longer we look the more money we get, so we just set up all 3 computers to have accounts and run them always :) pays for our adsl :D

I found a win 2000 server that lived 4 5 and a half years before it overheated...

Question: Why don't fans themselves overheat? Does it take an incredibly long time for them to do so ?_?
