Nerds vs Geeks

Hi everybody!
I was just thinking... Out there in the world, there are nerds, and there are geeks.

I was wondering what you all though each one is?
For classifying nerds, I think they come in two categories:
Mean evil nerds who are smart and crush other nice nerds and
nice nerds who are smart and nice.
Of course below the two categories there are the varietys. Some nerds are artsy-nerds, some are literature-nerds and then there are computer-nerds.

Geeks on the other hand can be obsessive about a certain subject, or just plain weird like the kid with big glasses who eats paste.

Well, that's just what I think... What about you guys?

I think the difference between geeks and nerds are that nerds are smart, but geeks don't have to be smart, just obsessive.

One does not have to be a nerd or a geek to enjoy Webdeving,
I like both Physical and Intellectual pursuits....

They both are horrible... A geek gets embarrsed daily while the nerd has bad hygeine. Both are usually loners. A nerd is unattractive while a geek acts strangely. e.g. trips and spills a carton of milk on the dean's head. However both are regarded as foolish while they both are bookwurms.

Bah... I played too much Final Fantasy where they had some sort of character called a "wurm" which they mispelled on purpose to name one of the enemy worms... Harry Potter is a good book btw. I finished the 6th book in about 8 hours. I'm no bookworm but, if there where such a word, I'm a computerworm.

So..... Though you say geeks and nerds are both horrible, which one would you say you are closet to being? Nerd or Geek... Choose your destiny!

The defination of both a nerd and a geek is someone who studies a lot. Look 'em up.
If you've got good hygine and aren't unatractive then you're not a geek. You might be something else but are surely not a geek.

There is no such thing as destiny. I prefer not to answer questions of the such. This thread was made explicitly for the purpose of debating between what the words mean not for classifing each other with such titles.

Well, the dictionary sums them up as such:

nerd (slang) - n. - A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.

geek (slang) - n. - A person regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy.

I tend to agree with these definitions. The slang term "nerd" as we know it, tends to refer to someone scientifically-oriented. A geek doesn't have to be. When you say nerd, I conjure of an image of someone pale and lanky and smart. Because nerds are supposed to be totally devoted to the technical (like jocks are totally devoted to sports).

wow. All of you seem way too wrapped up in this. They're both slang terms, so the definition will vary depending on who you ask. And that includes dictionaries. It's nothing to get offended over and it's definitely not something to get into a heated debate over.

Hmm I think I'm a nerd. Became one recently after starting tertiary education. My classmates think I'm a genius (well certainly not but above average by a little). I didn't tell them that I'm obsessed with my performace. (spoils the whole genius thing, lol) =/

Yeah, I'm only a nerd because I spend my life in front of a computer screen in the dark. It messed my eyes up, so I had to get glasses which complete the whole nerd thing (No they aren't big ugly plastic frames or thin wire)

last night during a lecture i saw a guy picking his nose, commented to a friend - look at that hes picking his nose during class - the friend said he's eating it!
indeed he was picking and nibbling away when i looked back
that guy i consider more of a geek while id be a general nerd for my interest in computers and reading, the 2 words are interchangeable in speech tho

Well, take Mausau2000's avatar for example... If I animate it, no longer will it walk.
It will just be a spinning disk. Jeff's head was perfect because it was only a white background so it was easy to cut out. I don't animate frame by frame--I just tell my software how to animate it, how many frames, dimensions and all that. It does the work for me.
My favorite things to do to images are makeovers, superimposing things and animating little things like the makover fading on and off. I do that to all the celebs I don't like.
