I have been searching around for information on how to achieve the most accurate and detailed quote I can for web design but it hasn't been easy. So here I am asking about what works for you? How do you obtain the most accurate and detailed quote for your clients? What process do you go through to get it?

Weigh up your costs and resources and quote what you think is fair. Costs and resources would include time, software, hardware, scope, travel, ongoing expenses (hosting, SEO, maintenance), etc, etc.

Keep in mind that it is illegal to compare pricing and monetary strategies in the US. We cannot discuss money.

Regards.

What does that mean?

it means and amercian person or company can not legally talk openly about the price to charge or moneymaking schemes and so on in a open or public enviroment.

from what i can gather but im over in New Zealand, and generally i go by how big, hard, and how well i know the person, as in 3 out of the 4 sites i am workin on i met ther person at the pub so their price included another "Site Discussion" night or two back at the pub! :)

You can find the information you need regarding pricing discussions here: http://www.webdeveloper.com/forum/pricing_faq.html

Unless you know something I don't, it isn't illegal to discuss and compare pricing. It is only illegal to conspire to set prices, meaning, we all agree to charge the same price. This is anti-competitive and not allowed.

That is why products listed at the store are "suggested retail price". The retailer is free to set whatever he wishes. The chain restaurant I own receives "recommended pricing" from headquarters but we are free to set whatever we wish (and I do).

You can check the links on the page regarding pricing discussions. Several have been persecuted for it.

Nevertheless, it is a policy of Jupitermedia Corporation and applies to these forums. It's not up for debate here.

The original question in this thread pertains to how to price services, not the prices themselves. That would include items such as equipment costs, overhead, supplies, and labor. There are links on the pricing FAQ (http://www.webdeveloper.com/forum/pricing_faq.html) for how to get the information from other sources. NetNerd85 had a legitimate question. Let's focus on that.

it is a policy of Jupitermedia Corporation and applies to these forums. Understand that.
Unless someone wants to open another thread this will be my last comment about it.

I disagree people are "prosecuted" for discussion. The discussion is not the issue, it's the resulting conspiracy to fix prices which was the problem.

From the anti-trust website:

"...defendant and co-conspirators engaged in a combination and conspiracy to suppress and eliminate competition by fixing the prices..."

"The charged combination and conspiracy consisted of a continuing agreement, understanding, and concert of action among the defendant and co-conspirators, the substantial terms of which were to agree to fix and maintain prices..."

Evidence of this was a discussion among the conspirators but the discussion itself is not illegal.

The rules, regarding pricing as well as any others, are not up for discussion on these forums. They stand as they are.
