MS Word .dot open

I have a problem which sounds simple, but I can't find a way round. I have some MS Word templates (*.dot files) that I want to put on my intranet. I'd like it so that when users click on the link, a new Word document is created, based on the template. Putting the usual <a href="template.dot"> code just causes that file to be opened in Word, rather than spawning a new doc. I've tried using VB to create the docs, and it works fine for templates based on physical drives, but not over the net (yet for some reason I can open *.doc files over the net fine).
