Hi Everyone,
I am thinking about starting a web design business. When you all started what were the things you did not know that you now know? These would be the things that would have helped you when you started. :) Thanks for your help!

I will give a detailed reply in a few hours. But for now, I will move this thread to the Business Matters forum.

An important rule of having a business is offering something unique.. whether it be low prices, extra services, customer-friendly work, etc.
For instance, I specialize in websites for artists and musicians, and I also offer a very customer-friendly approach to conceptualizing the site.

Also you need a good team that can work together , you will need specialist in all common web development spheres like :
-Flash
-Graphical design
-Server side coders : php , asp ....

Ok. I will write some thoughts down.
- Spend some time building relationships with fellow developers/designers/etc. I have a few people with whom I share alot of work. We generally break projects down into small modules and hand out each one to the person who we think will be able to tackle it with the most ease. This is a good way to generate lots of business, but far from a mandatory business decision.
- Don't fool yourself into thinking that running a Web Development business is, conceptually, any different from running a business of another nature. Alot of people underestimate the knowledge needed to run a business. Knowing XHTML strict is not everything. Infact, it is practicially nothing and definately not a requirement.
- Finding a niche (mentioned previously) may be a profitable business decision. Because of the mass of options available to anyone who wants a Website, it is important that you can target a specific market. This is not something I practise at this point in time, but definately worth mentioning. The same applies to the Software Development category -- generic servicing is no longer sought after.
Without getting into the obvious, more will come to me soon.
Regards.
