Adding an Online Forum

I administer a simple HTML site ( www.friendsofyosar.org ) and would like to add an online forum.

I don't know where to begin; what languages and softwares should I consider? Is it fairly simple to set up such a forum (I have a background in software development), or will it be more reasonable to purchase a third-party solution? Where do I start looking?

Your web server has PHP available. There are a huge number of free forums written with PHP so I would start there. Go to http://opensourcecms.com and look at the forum software there.
