I'm sure there have been dozens of topics like this before, but I'm not sure of this forum's policy on gravedigging. Some would rather you revive an old thread, others would rather you made a new one..
But anyway: What sorts of music do you guys like to listen to? Assuming, of course, that you like to listen to music.
I feel kind of out of place when I tell geeks what sort of music I listen to (plus, I'm sure I'm the only person here with their lip pierced ;P ), and at the same time, I feel out of place when I tell people who listen to the music I listen to that I'm a geek. It's an odd feeling.
But either way, I'm a big black metal enthusiest. I love just about any other genre of metal (save for goth, glam, and grindcore), but black metal has really caught my attention. I don't necessarily care for the content (which primarily is very heavily influenced by Satanism--both true Laveyan Satanism, and the Satanism dreamed up by the Church), but the music is just phenomenal. Groups like Emperor, Susperia, Borknagar, Dimmu Borgir, Old Man's Child, Kreator, and The Kovenant just totally rock my world.
I like Gothic metal (not to be confused with pussy, whiney goth metal) a lot too. Nightwish is the best I've heard of the genre.
Other groups that hold a special place in my heart are Fear Factory (Probably my favorite group overall), Children of Bodom, In Flames (Though, I didn't care for their last album) Metallica (Pre-Load. Everything after the black album just wasn't as good), Testament, Megadeth, Iced Earth, Kamelot, Rhapsody, Dream Theater (Mike Portnoy is one of my heroes--he's the most amazing drummer I've ever seen or heard), and many others.
How about you guys (and, possibly, gals)?

We're actually a pretty diverse lot here. Some are indeed 100% grade A, premium quality geek, but this is a forum of web developers, not stereotypes. ;)Personally I'm a much more cheery kind of bunny. One of my most favourite groups is called Jurassic 5. They're a hip hop based group which also holds as a member one of my favourite musicians. A DJ known as "Cut Chemist". Another of my all time favourite DJ's is a Chap best known as "DJ Shadow". An incredibly cheesy name I know, but I believe his work to be some of the finest on the planet, a truly diverse atrist if ever there was one. 3 CD's of James Brown's greatest hits are currently in my CD player at the mo' though.

I'm open to just about all music, not just Metal. I should have noted that.
For DJ's, my I like Junkie XL (If only for the remixes he did for Fear Factory's "Remanufacture" EP :D ), and (although I'm not sure if he counts as a DJ, per se, but) Amon Tobin (a.k.a. Cujo)--Especially his last two albums, Out From Out Where and Supermodified. You can hear his music in the new Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. He's pretty awesome.
I'm sure I've heard Jurassic 5 before, but can't place it. I do like a bit of hip hop, but find that most of it sounds the same. I like some old school gangsta rap like Snoop Dogg's older stuff, Dr. Dre, NWA, Public Enemy, etc. I can't think of any strictly hip hop groups I like right off the top of my head, though.

I like some Gangster Rap, but I don't care for a lot of it. The same is also true of most modern stuff. Mosly just talentless fakers portraying a false image simply to sell records. James Brown, one of the greatest musicians ever, but I don't remember him ever threatening to shoot me if I ever "stepped into his hood". He was far from a saint, but he wasn't a talentless loser. I'm more into the De La Soul or Blackalicious style. Actual music, as opposed to empty bravado to a beat.

Technically, rap isn't music to begin with. It lacks melody for the most part, which is the main reason I dislike it--It's so monotonous. Dr. Dre was one of the few that actually put a little melody in there, which is one of the reasons I like him (and, conversely, I like eminem for Dre's producing work. I don't care for the content, however).
I'm not sure how comparing James Brown to gangsta rap comes in, though XP

Eminem is the only recent one I've heard that I really like, but I haven't heard anything of his since his third album. It's the content I liked. I liked the music, but the real thing I liked was the lyrics. Yeah there are "Explicit lyrics" but the fact that he had something to say and didn't try making himself out to be super gangster number one whilst saying it is what I liked. A bit of honesty.
The James Brown example was just to say that he sold records on quality, not on presenting some fake, glorified "lifestyle" to sell records.

I don't really care for the content, for the simple fact that I don't care for poetry ;P
I'm a wierdo. I love prose, but hate poetry. To me, it's much more effective to portray something by describing it, rather than describing what it's like, with as few words as possible (as most poetry seems to me). *shrug*
Which isn't to say I dont' like lyrics, even though they're more or less the same thing. I guess more accurately, I like the voice as an instrument, and I like knowing what the lyrics are purely so I can sing along. I'm a dork like that :)

lol.I know exactly what you mean, but then that's the beauty of art isn't it. Thousands can like the same identical piece, but all in their own way and for their own reasons and they each take something unique from it.
To each, their own. ;)

Modern big band jazz (not '40s swing, but new original stuff), e.g.: Don Ellis Orchestra, some of the Stan Kenton and Woody Herman bands, Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band.
Jazz Rock such as Chase, Blood Sweat & Tears, Tower of Power (jazz funk?), and the first few Chicago albums.
Classic rock, e.g.: Floyd, Yes, Genesis (up through "Trick of the Tail"); plus the lesser-known Renaissance and Gentle Giant.
Classical, mainly symphonic works from Beethoven and later, including Stravinsky, Copland, and Shostakovich.
All sorts of odds and ends from many different genres, such as Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Baroque brass choir music, Kate Bush, and anything else that catches my ear and is creative, not derivative.

thedigitalnomad, I am wearing a Burzum shirt right now as I listen to my old Isengard (personal project of Fenriz rfom Darkthrone) album.
My tastes are quite diverse. My average day normally starts with some Raw Black Metal like Tartosghard, Oblomov, Mystic Forest, or old Summoning. Then I listen to some classical music, usually centering around the works on Bach, Wagner, and Stronimsky.
For lunch I like some post-black, Norse folk music, such as Ogneslav, and Helgadom.
I often end the day with some brutal Death Metal like Decrepit Birth, Nile, Oni, or Beneath the Massacre. Or mayby some Medieval ambient like Acyronical Ritual or Aardia.

I haven't heard of half those bands. At the same time, it's relatively difficult to get a hold of all sorts of death and black metal here in Bumfuk Egypt. Black metal in general hasn't saturated much into America yet, either (which is sad). The only "good" (in everyone else's opinion) American black metal group is Goatwhore.
What is the black metal scene generally like there in Australia? I know of at least one or two black metal groups from over there.
Either way, my best resource for new music has been BNR Metal (http://www.bnrmetal.com) and Metalstorm (http://www.metalstorm.ee). And, of course, fellow metalheads I meet online, like yourself :D

You need to hear Burzum.
The metal scene in general is really good down under. There are thousands of us. Black Metal always is, and always will be, a very underground genre.
Black Witchery are a good BM band from America. Forest of Impaled are also extremely good (and from USA).

YES!!!!!
Hehe love vinyl man!
I basically love music in general... for instance right now playing on my iTunes is Kitaro, which is like Japanese Symphany Orchistra but that is about to end and who knows what will come on next (it's on random all the time unless I have a particular taste for something that day) maybe John Coltrane maybe Otep who knows... wait it is changing... HAH LOVE IT Barenaked Ladies - Be My Yoko Ono... anyway if I had to nail it down to only a few genres that I prefer over all the rest it would have to be in this order...
Electronica -
Jazzy House
Drum -n- Bass
Jungle
Trance
Ambient/DownTempo <- GREAT for working on websites ;) it's not too distracting
DJ Shadow
Nightmares On Wax
Dj Krush
Ian Pooley
Fatboy Slim
BT
Keoki
4Hero
geez I could go on and on and on about this
Rock/Pop -
80's MUSIC WILL LIVE FOREVER!!!
then again so will the 70's HAHA YES (as a matter of fact The Guess Who just came on iTunes)
Jazz/Acid Jazz -
I love the old stuff for sure! There is a lot of great new stuff too!
Rap/Hip Hop
Really I shouldn't combine the two but I will. They are completly different imo.
Wow this iTunes is reading my mind... ODB w/ Pharrel just came on this is too weird...
Anyway, I like true Hip-Hop. Basically street poetry with a beat. Someone said that it has no melody... It's not supposed to really. It's about the lyrics not the "music" or "melody"
The voice and words are the insturments.
Aesop Rock
Eric B & Rakim
Slug
etc...
I absolutly adore Bjork! I love mixing her music! Oh and how could I forget... GoldFrapp holy monkey!!! She has probably the sexiest voice since that chic from The Cardigans :o
Oh and I forgot to mention... The Beastie Boys & OutKast!!! My Heros!!!
::Edit:: Yo I don't know if y'all visit MySpace or not but check this band out they are kinda growing on me as of late...

I own a few Vinyls, even if they were before my time :p. Got a turn table hooked up to an old tuner of mine which actually has phono input. Have some Zeppelin, Floyd, and Ramones vinyls.
I kind of bounce around within the broad genre of rock. But mostly I listen to rock, you know, though I do enjoy the occasional jazz or blues piece. From british invasion (The Big Four: Beatles, The Who, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin) with other classics, Jimi Henrix, The Doors, Pink Floyd, the Eagles, Cream, Iron Butterfly, Black Sabbath, some AC DC, earlier Metallica. Other stuff like Sound Garden, Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, Jet, The Datsuns, and The Vines. But I'll also listen to other stuff like Franz Ferdinand, the Futureheads, the Hives, and the White Stripes.
One thing I want to know, is listening to an entire album a dieing thing? It seems most everyone I know, especially with the advent of services like iTunes, just download singles "I like this song" and no one likes albums. I still buy CD's, because a good band putting together an album, the album is part of it. Of course the crap pop is a single or two and filler, but a well thought out album is something great. I'm not talking a rock opera necessarily, like The Wall or Tommy, just a well arranged album.

I'm definitely an album man. I haven't really gone in for all this downloading business myself. Before I killed the sound on my PC I used to rip my CD's to the PC, but I still ripped 'em and listened to them as albums. I rip 'em to my Xbox now, but i'm still the same with that. I do make kinds of type packages for my games. Like I'll make a grouping of all my favourite driving tunes so I can just quickly select that set of songs for my driving games, so I group songs fitting to a genre, but only for the purposes of games. When I listen to my music straight out of the Xbox dash, I invariably listen to them album by album.

I'm an "album man" too. I've downloaded before, but I quit. Heh. Sounds like a drug. The RIAA will do their damndest to make you think that, too.
I do rip my CD's to my PC, but these days it's mostly just for backup purposes. I'm a lot more gentle with my cds than I used to, but I still get a few of them a little too junked up to play. I listen to stuff straight off of my PC sometimes, but not too much anymore as my sound card is slowly dying.
An album is an experience, though. Especially delving into a lot of power metal. I think concept albums are pretty awesome. My favorite overall is Fear Factory's "Obsolete". I've always been a sucker for a good sci-fi concept. Man vs. Machine is a fun concept unto itself.

Agent Steel used to do that back in the early eighties. They were/are awesome. So did GWAR! Luca Turilli did a cool album about galactic battles.

I'm mainly into rock, but I'm an electronica and jazz fan, too (Nogdog -- I'm going to have to look into the bands you listed). As for bands...
Semi-mainstream "dark-ish" stuff: Tool, APC, Disturbed, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie and Nine Inch Nails (Reznor is to me what Malmsteen, Ozzy, (Billy) Armstrong, or Snoop Dogg are to some others)
I listen to some the classics, but not to the extent that some people (cough, cough Bob) do: Black Sabbath (as well as Ozzy's solo stuff), Soundgarden (not as keen on Audioslave, or Cornell's solo effors, though some of it is good stuff), GnR, The Who (Tommy rules, iffy on most of their other stuff), and Iron Maiden.
Some of the more "kicky" stuff: The Cure, Death Cab, Aphex Twin, New Order, The Killers, and Depeche Mode
And some of the more obscure stuff: Cold (their earlier stuff was better.../sigh), Killing Joke (thank you, Asterisk), Switchblade Symphony (all together awesome, "Sinister Nostalgia" (goth rock+techno is definitely a good thing) is damned orgasmic), and Skinny Puppy.
That's about it. The only jazz band I've listened to is The Seatbelts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Seatbelts) (true geek rock, very good stuff ... not all jazz, but much of it is), so no point listing them, eh?

Not Iron man; The Blizzard of Oz album really, and Paranoid (minus iron man).
