Detect who the user is to alter homepage

Hello, any ideas or thoughts on the following would be much appreciated:

The homepage I am designing for an intranet is slightly different depending on who the user is. I need to write a script that can find out what the usersID is and direct them to the appropriate homepage.

Is this possible???
