Speakers cannot play anything but annoying beep sound

Hi all,

My altec lansing speakers were working fine (all I did when setting up my computer was plug in the green jack and usb) until today, when all of a sudden the sound blanked out. When I turned the volume up, I get the crackly noise, and when i minimize/maximize, scroll up/down with my mouse scroll roller, there are those wierd sounds. Can anyone help please?

Check the options in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices, some games mess with the options.
Are the beeping sounds coming from the external or internal speaker(s)?
