just wondering, it is very grey (or blue/grey). i see you have used orange for the ratings, but maybe you could introduce a little more in your scheme.

what about applying a subtle gradient in the background - kind simple but gives a nice feel to it.

I totally agree with mzsolutions. Why not also find a graphic banner that would give your site a more fresh look and has a branding and memorizing effect?

Why are you duplicating the sords "SEO Articles, Guides, Resources and Tools for Search Engine Optimization"? Why the duplicated "Newest SEO Articles?" link?

Your adsense bar padded within another box looks somwhat like a kludge. I would just get rid of the extra boxing.

What about adding a few more items to your menu on top? I found myself lookking for some sort of a site navigation, just to find out that this was it.

I wonder how you will achieve decent SERPS on a crowded market like SEO unless you clearly specialize on a speicific niche, but this would be another story...

The design looks pretty good, but you definately need to spice up your site with some colors. I agree that orange would fit well.

For a moment, when your site loaded ( full screen ), I thought there was a problem with my graphic card...
Really, colors ( not too much, you don't want your site to look like a christmas tree ) can make the difference.

I don't know the default wordpress design, but I agree that it's quite plain. It lacks originality. And I think the previous one was better, even with its two colors...
