Promotion of New Online Store - Limited Budget

Hi,

I just recently launched my first online store which sells shoes, I am wondering the best place to start for promoting my site. I have read about back links, so I am going to try and create as many legitimate ones as possible but I was wondering what else has worked for others? I read a lot about Google adwords (I think that is what it is?) ... is that expensive? I have a very limited budget right now. Anyway, I will continue reading the related threads here :-)
