New to XML

Could someone please point me in the right direction for a tutorial on XML.
I currently write websites using plain HTML, PHP and MySQL.

I've never even looked at XML until now.

What is it?
How do you program in it?

I know NOTHING about XML, so need a basic "What is it" tutorial.
