i have designed a webpage in the past for friends and family using html <--my experience.

I have been looking for a guide on how to develop a "realtime status" for customer website. Basically my company gets 150 engine parts to work on a week (52 weeks a year). And the phones are constantly ringing with customers asking very simple questions and status of their parts. There are 5 full-time and 3 part-time employees on phones all day long. The thing is some of the people on the phone really need to be on the shop floor working and making decision on what needs to be done. Around 200+ hrs are spent on the phones a week telling customers something they could easily find out by other means e.g. website

Is there a guide or some starting suggestions on where i should look?

Basic requirements:
1. have accounts for each customer to access for status of their parts
2. when parts come in, take a pic. and note some pre-insp. comments that can be viewable when customer logs in?
3. as parts are worked on, comments are added by us on work performed
4. customer also able to leave comments (i dkont know at this point if its necessary)

This way, phone calls will be reduced and fewer people can be dedicated to updating website status as determined.

I use newegg quite a bit and am really IMPRESSED by their setup, I am able to look up invoices that are over 2 years old!!!

It seems simple enough to me, but dont know where to start. Also, when/if this is working and is a daily use in our operation it need to be simple enough to use by people with minimal computer experience.

thanks

P.S. i could simply suggest to the boss, that we hire some company to do this setup, but whats the fun in that.

I would very strongly suggest you hire a professional to do this. If your only experience is with HTML, then trying to do this yourself will be a very bad idea.

Attempting to hire developers from this forum is not allowed, but you can find plenty of people to do it at http://www.dice.com/

Newegg looks simple because it is well designed. A well designed site or web application should always look simple and be easy to use, but I guarantee you that no aspect of that companies site is simple or easy.

I also warn you that a decent reliable developer will not be cheap. Reasearch, research, research before you commit to anything. Most of the clients i have had are refugees from a web development disaster.
