Kaspersky is one of the best, or so I've heard, but I'd hardly call Norton at the bottom of the list.

Just remember, an anti-virus is only as good as it's currently installed virus definitions; if your definitions are 2 weeks old, then it's worthless -- it's the users responsibility to keep the anti-virus upto date. In your case, run LiveUpdate atleast once a day.

All of the reviews I have seen list NOD as number one and Kapersky as number two. From what I can see the main difference between the top 20 is the amount of time taken to incoprorate signatures to identify new viruses. All of the top 20 antivirus programs do this within 12 hours of one another. The biggest security hole for most people is the time between when a new signature file becomes available and when they install it as some people are silly enough to only update these weekly. The top AV all support hourly tests for new signature files which reduces the exposure time to a minimum.

I did a test with Norton kaspersky NOD and the best Anti-virus program was Norton 4 finding old and New and non-existant virus's.
kaspersky 4 design
and NOD 4 cheapness

I've used avast (http://www.avast.com/) for a few years now without a virus getting through.
There's a free version and it automatically updates signature files.

The top computer security sites list NOD as the best purchased AV and Avast as the best free one.

Did you have a proper setup with tens of thousands of viruses to test the programs with? NOD and Kapersky are usually the only two AVs that rate 100% at finding all known viruses and better than 99% unknown. Most other decent AVs rate 100% known and 70%+ on unknown. Results from proper tests run by official virus test labs and reprinted in computer magazines.

Symantec IS Norton. It's just the name they give their home edition.
