Drop-down menus

Does anyone know where there is a good tutorial on creating drop-down menus. I have seen loads of scripts and got some of them to work without understanding how they work. I am looking for a tutorial that explains the basics about layers, about how the menus link to sub-menus and how the visibility changes when various events happen.
