I am trying to understand a little more in depth about SEO.

I have noticed on one site: www.windsormortgage.ca that this person listed on the bottom of his page ALL of his major competitors... For example:

Similar services offered through: CompanyA, Company B, Company C, Company D.

Serving Areas: City 1, City 2, City 3, City 4, City 5, etc.

My initial thought was he was doing it for search engine keywords and so if someone typed in his competitor & the city that he would still pop up.

When I looked at his page more closely, I noticed that each company listed was actually a link to the competitors web page... WHY? I don't understand why someone would link to their competitors... Does this give them a higher ranking in the search engines??

Also, each city listed linked to a page on his site which was just a generic page but had the name of the city at the top of the page. WHY?

I don't really understand the benefit... Is there a better "rating" if you have links as opposed to just the words???

Any help is appreciated.

By linking to other sites, this site is losing PR.
