Frontpage, i know that dreamweaver is better but it is a lot more expensive. Frontpage is only really good for beginners now as it is similar to the MS Office layout. I code manually using frontpage as i can instantly see the results.

I use Dreamweaver MX2004. Fairly handy. I often work directly in the code window (especially when generating a layout in CSS) - if working in Design, then I check the code regularly. I believe the latest version is better at showing CSS layout - but in any case, I recommend checking on a server - in several browsers, of course.

I like the way it auto-suggests coding - and colour-codes syntax. HTML validation also seems good - though mine does not pick up any alt tags. I do a final validation with the w3c validator.

i use dreamweaver mx 2004, i have the new studio 8, to stay the least the new one is crap just a washed over version of mx 2004, i personally hate whatever they did to it, i use code view mainly as for all the other features except for the site management, colored syntax, auto-tag/function on typing are only useless for a coder of my calibur

The poll is poorly worded... I use neither, but Dreamweaver is the winner hands-down.

yeah Id like to vote for cutting off my foot...
but its not an option?!?

If I was going to use an automated ide I would use frontpage because its has the most automation and its drag drop hacks.

I prefer Dreamweaver, although it has many problems. As previously mentioned by others, I too like the code view's colored html and the automatic closing of tags. Additionally, I like the "clean up html." Helps me quickly fix those Word documents that overly "helpful folks" have saved as a webpages.

FrontPage proved bad for our agency in that it had too many options that allowed one person's error to easily change everything within the site.

frontpage is an abomination (as with most microsoft products) lol

I just love the rediculus lengths microsoft went to with the drag and drop,

You can drag entire files of all different types into an open web page, it pulls all kind of whack stuff to emulate the files look, creates a million tables and cells to line it all up.

I like the save as web page option too, that ones a laugh code internal links with 10 digit unrecognizable id numbers, fantastic.

Waylander.

Frontpage - when I want to get the job done quickly and painlessly. I love the open web feature. I have a site that get updated daily and love to be able to just open the page make my changes and when I hit save it saves live to the website.

Not sure what 10 digit number you're refering to Waylander???

However the Dreamweaver extensions are very nice. Not to mention it has everything from page color; to text color; to font size; to alt tab; etc laid out and hard to forget to do where as in Frontpage you have a tendency to forget those since they are "hidden" (talking from the design view perspective).

Love the right click options 110% better in Frontpage vs. Dreamweaver

I should go back to using Dreamweaver again and I could probably come up with 20 more things that are easier to do in Frontpage.

Sorry I'm just to impatient to work with Dreamweaver on a daily basis.

Oh yeah Dreaweaver is updated a lot more versus Frontpage. Might be wrong but I think you got 3 versions of Dreamweaver in before Frontpage went from 2000 --> 2003/XP. Dreamweaver is certainly more updated technology and feature wise.

Either way (unless the new Dreamweaver does) both of them stink because they don't make doing a site with CSS "easy" in design view. I'm referring to how much easier it is to do a tables layout in design view versus CSS.

When it comes to these two programs it's six of one -- half a dozen of the other.

Funny you should say that, because the latest version of Dreamweaver has its own CSS panel in design view. It did exist in the 2004 version but it was tucked away in the tab of another panel.

I use neither, I use a tabbed 20+ language syntax text editor called Notepad++. But iv used DWMX and FP, DW wins IMO. Iv never had any real problems with coding html/css(when i started webdev i did :D), except for maybe browser compatibility. I dont prefer IDE, but im sayin that cuz iv never worked on a huge several k lines of code project. Im just starting one now. :)

I used to use Frontpage years ago I haven't really used Dreamweaver much! I prefer to stick with good ol' Notepad! But I think Dreamweaver is better then Frontpage!

When I first started web development I tried Dreamweaver,GoLive and FP, in that order. What a waste of money, and more importantly, time.

By the time I got any good at clicking through these programs I could have learned to write multiple web languages.

I agree. I don't think it takes any longer to learn the languages than to learn a program like those mentioned.

FrontPage for me, but only because I've never tried (and probably never will) Dreamweaver.

Give me a few months and I can master FrontPage, give me a few years and I'll know CSS/HTML inside out, and give me a few decades and I just might grasp the concepts of Java.

As I was told by a boss a long time ago "You will never get fired with going with Microsoft"! As bad as FrontPage 2003 is it still is the best (for MS)! HAAHAA!

I use Frontpage. I've tried using Dreamweaver a little bit since I've heard that it's better, but nothing stood out for me right away. I suppose one's preference is based on what one is more accustomed to. I know my way around FP well, so it's a lot easier for me to use. I wish there were more addons and stuff available for it, though.

**Sort of off topic** I know the original question is to see what is better Dreamweaver or Frontpage. However does it really matter??

I don't judge a website's success on who coded it the best and how. For me success lies simply in how many visitors can I turn into customers.

At the end of the day if my site is bringing in $$$ and improving over time doesn't matter what program I use.

I guess it's dependent upon if you have several people or one person working on a website, as to whether one program is better or not. We have lots of customers (about 300,000+ a month) who seem pretty happy with what we've got out there -- as long as one of our staff doesn't screw it up with either FrontPage or Dreamweaver.

I use notepad++.
For me it is alot better since i need to learn the programming part.
Want to become a programmer later, code only for me.

Out of the two listed DW does a better job though they are both no substitute for hand-rolling.

i've never used front page, and i've only started messing w/dw last week. having seen what users do w/front page i think all you can do is create some static web pages with a buch of jacked up html (not that dw is perfect). dw is more robust in that one can do web programming in addtion to page layout. if you're a programmer, then use dw. if you're a web designer... use dw. ;-)

I started out using Dreamweaver, got frustrated with it because that version had no lines numbers in it. Then went to Frontpage and hated the way it always adds extras to the code.

I prefer hard coding everything (more control that way, and keeps my skills sharp) and the only reason I don't use Notepad is because you can't color-code varies types of commands, coupled with there are too many steps to take to preview.

An IT administrator at a company I was working for suggested AceHTML. It's a low cost, sort of bare bones program, but I love it. Does what I need it to do.

Has anyone here heard of that program?

I use Dreamweaver 8.0 and love it. I made the switch from FP 2003 to DW MX 2004 and uninstalled FP within 2 days of making that switch! I recently download the DW 8 version and it is somewhat the same. I haven't really seen a different yet except for the message boxes that appear different than the MX 2004's. I had to clean all the HTML FP generated when I switched to DW. It took awhile but I did it! DW is very simple to use once you get the hang of it and also I have the Exchange Manager! where you can install 3rd party add-ins to DW! Awesome feature!!

I use Dreamweaver(mostly the code window), I like to get an idea of what my page looks like and experiment on how things look before I upload it. I dont really use all the little tag helpers and stuff...usually just type right through them. :)
