Collect visitor e-mail addresses in exchange for articles

My website has some articles that I believe will be very valuable to our target audience. I don't want to password protect them or charge for them, but I would like to get something for all that hard work. Namely, e-mail addresses for use in future promotions.

The thing is, I don't want to ask them for their e-mail address every time they want an article. Once is enough!! Anybody have any ideas?

I was finding it difficult to grasp the cookie-popup connection, so I just used this:
